Claudine Barretto Lost P5-M in Bank

Claudine Barretto is again at the center of controversy when "24 Oras", GMA-7's news program, reported that the actress was seen making a scene yesterday, October 25, at Union Bank in Quezon Avenue, QC after the money she tried to withdraw from her joint bank account savings with husband Raymart Santiago allegedly disappeared mysteriously.

Report says that the Kapuso actress went to Union Bank with her lawyer, Atty. Agnes Maranan, at around 12nn yesterday to withdraw an amount of P5-million. The money, according to Atty. Maranan was still there when they arrived as confirmed by the bank teller. But during the processing of their withdrawal, they were told that the money was no longer available as an “inter-bank withdrawal” was processed by another person.

When asked about the details of the incident, Atty. Maranan said, “Draw your own conclusions pero the timing, ‘no… It was withdraw at the time we were here asking to withdraw it. We were here for more than 30 minutes. I was able to confirm from the teller that the funds were still there; and then suddenly, about 40 minutes or 30 minutes later, wala na ‘yung funds.”

According to “24 Oras” showbiz field reporter Nelson Canlas, they tried to contact Raymart for any statement but the actor is not yet available during the time of the report.

Rumors has it for several months now that Claudine's relationship with Raymart is not in good level to as far as saying they had already parted ways. The couple, however, had denied the rumor many times already.

The State of Kapuso Drama

Although rival ABS-CBN pioneered in Philippine drama, GMA Network has always been competitive, in terms of innovation and exploration of new forms of drama.
Although GMA lagged behind its rival in the soap opera genre, it has produced several notable drama anthologies, which were praised before by critics and viewers alike.

In fact, there came a time that anthologies produced by GMA were perceived as better in terms of quality than those more-watched dramas of ABS-CBN.

Without any doubt, GMA has excelled in the fantasy genre, which propelled it to the top at the end of 2004. However, the popularity of the fantasy genre has subsided a bit, with hardcore drama re-surges in viewership.

And with heavy drama being the new programming trend, here entered the woes of GMA, as rival ABS-CBN has already created an image as the country's best drama producer.

In a brief comparison, the state of drama in GMA has stagnated and has improved minimally since the 90s while rival ABS-CBN has already explored every thinkable possibilities of Filipino drama --- from story to execution.

Although both networks were victims of formulated plot on its produced dramas, its rival can escape critics because of superior execution and the undeniably praise-worthy performances of its stars, which can't be said the same for GMA.

Here are my two cents with regards to GMA-produced dramas:

1. Plot/story should be original and socially-relevant. Concepts should be outstanding, and could create buzz among Filipino viewers.

Amaya, for instance is commendable. Though certain plots are a bit clicheic, they can be forgiven as the concept of the show in totality is new and fresh.

Most of the GMA drama shows right now from daytime to primetime include parents searching for their long lost kids. One or two could be passable, but nearly all the drama shows having that plot is already absurd.

2. Lame execution, with substandard production design. For instance, a scene showing characters eating in a supposedly high end and posh restaurant. But what you can see is a set with cheap looking furniture and odd-looking paintings that try so hard to convince viewers that it is an Italian resto.

While ABS-CBN dramas use lavish sets, with convincing vibe suitable for a particular scene, and most things in bigger scale --- be it a wedding scene or a party of supposed-to-be socialites. GMA drama shows lack the visual spectacle of its Kapamilya counterparts, and often leads to amateurish appeal.

3. The acting prowess of its stable of stars are very lame. I could not even recall one instance that I cried with a GMA-produced show.

I could only remember when my emotions touched, is with its dubbed Korean dramas and TAPED-produced shows aired during the Lenten season.

One reason is that actors are not convincing. Instead of sympathizing with them, one could laugh at how hard-sell these supposedly actors being promoted by GMA on its programming.

Even veteran and award-winning actors were not utilized well, in part because the plot doesn't give much justice to their talents, and at some point their inclusion in a particular show is a bit out of place in a crowd of bano actors.

I believe that the network should invest more on workshops, capitalizing more on its talents' talent rather than on flashy costumes and special effects.

Although there are several well-produced GMA dramas, these good ones are totally overshadowed by its lame and forgettable contemporaries. What GMA need right now is to start rebuilding its image on drama, and create a reputation of high caliber drama production.

Why is it that Kapuso drama shows of before are exceptionally better than its present offerings? I could list several teleseryes of GMA that are truly engaging in terms of execution and plot. I just hope that the Kapuso network will surprise us this coming 2012.

7 Weirdest Things about Moammar Gadhafi

Col. Moammar Gadhafi, the dictator who ruled Libya for 42 years, was killed by rebels in his hometown of Sirte on Thursday.

A dictator who oppressed his own people and sponsored terrorism abroad, Gadhafi's legacy will be stained by violence. But beyond his brutality, Gadhafi will be remembered for something else entirely… being a first-class weirdo.
In no particular order, ABCNews.com brings you the seven weirdest things about Moammar Gadhafi.

1. The "Bulletproof" Tent: When Gadhafi was at home in Tripoli, he lived in a well fortified compound with a complex system of escape tunnels. But when he travelled abroad, this "Bedouin" brought a bit of the desert with him, camping out in the world's capitals. The tent was so heavy it needed to be flown on a separate plane, wherever the dictator travelled. To complete the Arabian Nights theme, Gadhafi often would tether a camel or two outside.

2. All-Female Virgin Bodyguard Retinue: They apparently weren't around when Gadhafi needed them most on Thursday, but the eccentric dictator was historically protected by 40 well trained bodyguards – all of them women. The bodyguards, called "Amazons," were all reportedly virgins who took a vow of chastity upon joining the dictator's retinue. The women, trained at an all-female military academy, were handpicked by Gadhafi. They wore elaborate uniforms, as well as makeup and high-heeled combat boots.

3. His "Voluptuous" Ukrainian Nurse: For a decade, Galyna Kolotnytska, a Ukrainian nurse often described in the press as "voluptuous," was regularly seen at the dictator's side. Kolotnytska was described in a leaked diplomatic cable as one of Gadhafi's closest aides and was rumored to have a romantic relationship with him. Several other Ukrainian women served as nurses and they all referred to him as "Papa" or "Daddy."

4. Crush on Condoleezza Rice: In 2007, Gadhafi called former Sec. of State Condoleezza Rice his "darling black African woman" and on a 2008 visit she made to Tripoli, the dictator gave her $200,000 worth of gifts, including a ring and a lute. But it wasn't until rebels stormed his Tripoli compound that the depths of the dictator's infatuation were exposed. There among Gadhafi's belongings was a carefully composed photo album made up of dozens of images of no one but Rice.

5. Fear of Flying and Elevators: Part of the reason Gadhafi loved travelling with that tent of his was because he was worried about lodging in a hotel where he'd have to ride an elevator. According to leaked diplomatic cables, the Libyan didn't like heights much either, and would only climb to a height of 35 steps. He therefore wasn't much of a fan of flying, refusing to travel by air for more than eight hours at a time. When he would travel to New York of the U.N.'s annual general assembly, he would spend a night in Portugal on the way to the U.S.

6. Bunga Bunga: In 2010, one of Gadhafi's most eccentric pastimes was exposed by Italian prosecutors investigating Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. A 17-year-old prostitute named Karima el-Mahroug, better known as Ruby Heartstealer, revealed that she had been invited to an orgy, called a "bunga bunga." "Silvio told me that he'd copied that formula from Muammar Gadhafi," she told prosecutors according to La Repubblica. "It's a ritual of [Gadhafi's] African harem."

7. An Eclectic Wardrobe: In those photos of world leaders standing shoulder to shoulder on the sidelines of this or that international forum, Gadhafi was always the easiest to pick out. His wardrobe was an eclectic mix of ornate military uniforms, Miami Vice style leisure suits, and Bedouin robes. Gadhafi, who pushed for a pan-African federation of nations, often decorated his outfits with images of the African continent. He'd sport safari shirts printed with an Africa pattern, or wear garish pins or necklaces of the continent.

Former Bb. Pilipinas-World 2010 to compete in Miss Humanity International Pageant

After her unsuccessful bid for the most elusive international pageant for the Philippines, former Miss World representative Czarina Gatbonton will compete in the upcoming Miss Humanity International.
Heading to Barbados in the Caribbean, Czarina will once again bring with her the name of the country in a new international pageant which advocates to strengthen international humanitarian relations.

"This will be my second chance to crack for an international title, and this time I am more prepared and focused.” She added that “whatever lessons she learned from my previous international competition will definitely inspire me to do better this time around," Czarina ecstatically said.

Czarina's story has been a rags to riches one. She comes from a humble origin and has risen to prominence after bagging the Bb. Pilipinas-World crown. She has continuously inspired others through her various charity works.

TV Review: 2 Broke Girls

It is a show of contrasts and differences.
2 Broke Girls is an old-fashioned formulaic sitcom from CBS about two mismatched girls taking on the big city and making their dreams come true.

It is old-fashioned, as most CBS sitcoms do, filled with jokes that borderline offensive. If not only helped my the mesmerizing performance of lead stars Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs, the first episode has passed the gauge as hilarious, though like a lot of sitcom pilots, 2 Broke Girls is trying too hard.

The succeeding episodes were funnier and more natural, though much of the recent running jokes' success could be attributed to Kat Dennings, playing the street-smart and strong Max.

Beth Behrs portrayal of the one-dimensional character of the rich and spoiled Caroline gives an infectious pallet of the stereotyped spoiled rich girls who were forced to learn the ropes of life after suddenly getting bankrupt. In fact, most of the show's funniest scenes involve her struggles of learning a job she was never born to do, or what she thought so.

With vagina jokes all the show, Dennings endearing comic delivery has made the sex jokes humane and graceful as possible. Though there are several troubled instances, the show's heart clearly points to the inevitable friendship between two extremely different women.

The vulgarity of the jokes could be attributed to co-creator Whitney Cummings. Michael Patrick King's involvement as co-producer has added to the over-the-top jokes used, some of which are left-overs of his Sex and the City stint.

But the show is still one of the funniest freshman sitcoms, a complement to Two and a Half Men which precedes it's timeslot. I am optimistic that the show will shape up, and will give the 30-minute sitcom format a bit more snap.

"Ipinanganak ko po yung baby ko noong November 17, 2010 sa Capital Medical Center then hindi po totoo na si Congressman ang tatay ng anak ko kasi po imposibleng mangyari yon kasi ang father ng baby ko ay nasa Dubai po," she said.

Sofia Esser Quintero, a 19-year old student of scenic arts from the state of Sucre, has won as Miss Venezuela and will represent the most successful beauty pageant powerhouse in the Miss Universe 2012.
Meanwhile, the 20-year old Communications student representing Distrito Federal Gabriela Ferrari Peirano won the Miss World Venezuela title and will compete in the Miss World 2012.

On the other hand, Miss Guarico Blanca Aljibes, will represent Venezuela at the Miss International 2012 pageant in China. Miss Yaracuy, Osmariel Villalobos, will compete in Miss Earth 2012, and Miss Carabobo, Isabela Ramos Cano, was named the 1st runner-up.

24 beautiful women competed for the four titles and the right to represent Venezuela in the international pageants.

The national pageant shied away from its usual over the top and lavish presentation due to cost-cutting in the midst of Venezuela's economic turmoil.

But the downgrade of the production value didn't affect the high quality of beauties who have competed and won. Next year could be a year of vindication for Miss Venezuela based on the ladies crowned.

The Miss Venezuela pageant is the most watched national pageant in the planet, with a worldwide distribution in several markets. The success of this country in international beauty pageants attracted the attention of journalists and followers in a global scale.

Harry Potter star arrested for possession of explosives

Ten points off from Slytherin!
It is indeed true that one should never trust a Slytherin as Jamie Waylett, the actor who played Draco Malyfoy's sidekick Crabbe in the six Harry Potter films, was arrested and charged for possession of homemade explosives.

The 22-year old actor was identified in a video footage looting a drug store during the London riots.

The police has issued the following statement:

"[Waylett] was charged with violent disorder, having an article with intent to destroy or damage property, receiving stolen goods and also cultivating cannabis plants.

This is not the first of Waylett's entanglement with the local enforcers. He was arrested in 2009 due to suspicions of possessing marijuana.

Waylett has already posted a bail, but I think everyone's concern right now is how he'll get away with Professor Snape's punishment. It could be severe...

Where did ABS-CBN go wrong with 'Kapamilya Gold'?

ABS-CBN's dominance in the daytime race has suddenly been erased upon the exit of its phenomenal noontime show Wowowee. Two shows have filled the vacated slot, and both were trumped and murdered by rival Eat Bulaga of GMA.
Before, Wowowee's juggernaut ratings gave ABS-CBN's afternoon line-up a very good lead-in, making it formidable and virtually unbeaten. But the resurgence of Eat Bulaga upon Willie Revillame's departure benefited GMA Network as it's daytime teleseryes slowly gained the nationwide dominance.

Currently, the Kapuso network's Afternoon Prime block registers more than twice the ratings of ABS-CBN's combo of a movie block, reality show, daily gag show, and Korean imports. It is also important to note that several ABS-CBN daytime shows have also been defeated by some TV5 offerings in Mega Manila.

In reaction to the ratings slump of its daytime block, ABS-CBN announced the rebranding of its afternoon to Kapamilya Gold --- launched to bring the message of primetime-quality of dramas being brought to daytime.

But what happened was different.

Instead of bringing the shows announced on daytime, shows like Maria la del Barrio and Nasaan Ka Elisa? were launched on primetime. The supposed saviors of ABS-CBN's daytime, became the staple of its already strong primetime block.

Of the promised daytime shows, only Reputasyon premiered on daytime, then moved to late afternoon after initially recording dismal ratings. The show, which later on registered high ratings, is providing early primetime a solid pre-programming.

There were initial high hopes for Kapamily Gold with its supposed line-up of quality soap operas. Giving daytime a touch of its highly successful Primetime Bida block is a bold move, considering the higher cost and the idea being so risky with Eat Bulaga giving GMA dramas the advantage.

Rather than sticking with dramas, ABS-CBN gambled with a daily reality and a gag show as complementary shows for its noontime show. The result --- ABS-CBN scoring one of its lowest rated daytime shows ever. The two shows were then removed, and were replaced with the return of its afternoon movie block.

ABS-CBN may have forgotten that shows on daytime should target viewers who are usually left to tend the home while everyone goes to work or school --- the stay-at-home moms. And moms are die-hard lovers of soap operas. That is one lying fact that shouldn't be missed by TV programmers.

Ironic as it is, the network who boasts having the best Philippine dramas, is struggling in a timeblock where dramas supposed to reign supreme.

Instead of cramping four drama shows on primetime, ABS-CBN should have limit it to 3. With a drama already serving as pre-programming for its early nightly newscast, the network could have produced and launched 2 more on its early and late afternoon slots.

The viewers diaspora from its afternoon line-up to GMA Network is a clear message that daytime, as it always been and should be, the home of soap operas.
