US TV Ratings: 'Two and a Half Men' still on top, FOX's 'Terra Nova' descent pilot (Sept. 26, 2011)

The premiere of FOX's heavily promoted drama Terra Nova has registered so-so numbers, despite of the heavy hype built upon it.

CBS' Two and a Half Men, though slightly down from last week's premiere, is still the most watched show of the night helping propel the season premiere of Mike and Molly.

Over all, ABC's Dancing with the Stars and Castle combo made the network the most watched for the evening, followed by CBS, FOX, NBC and CW --- which isn't felt much during the evening with Gossip Girl and the premiere of Hart of Dixie.

The Playboy Club on NBC has entered the danger zone with its slightly below 4 million viewers for episode 2. Getting a second season for the show is getting dimmer.

8 p.m.

ABC: "Dancing With the Stars" (15.7 million viewers, 10.8/16 households)
CBS: "How I Met Your Mother" (10.6 million, 6.4/10)/"2 Broke Girls" (11.6 million, 7.0/10)
FOX: "Terra Nova" series premiere (9 million, 5.6/8)
NBC: "The Sing-Off" (4.8 million, 3.0/4)
The CW: "Gossip Girl" season premiere (1.4 million, 1.1/1)

18-49 leader: "2 Broke Girls" (4.5)

9 p.m.

CBS: "Two and a Half Men" (20 million, 12.0/17)/"Mike & Molly" season premiere (14 million, 11.2/16)
ABC: "Dancing With the Stars" (16.3 million, 11.2/15)
FOX: "Terra Nova" premiere (9 million, 5.5/8)
NBC: "The Sing-Off" (3.9 million, 2.4/3)
The CW: "Hart of Dixie" series premiere (1.8 million, 1.3/2)

18-49 leader: "Two and a Half Men" (7.2)

10 p.m.

ABC: "Castle" (11.9 million, 7.9/12)
CBS: "Hawaii Five-0" (11.1 million, 7.2/11)
NBC: "The Playboy Club" (3.9 million, 2.8/4)

18-49 leader: "Hawaii Five-0" (3.2)

TV Review: The Playboy Club pilot --- it's not what it seems

It is not what it seems to be.
NBC's new drama The Playboy Club has been criticized early this season as the title suggests more sex on television.

However, what I have seen in the pilot episode is a mix of mob, politics and empowered women in the 60's drama. The title might have misled several viewers, avoiding the show for its supposed taboo theme.

But the scantily-clad ladies are just part of the show's theme, of women working in Playboy Club to earn money while being exposed to society's elite --- mob leaders, powerful political scions and wealthy businessmen. I personally enjoyed the scenes where the bunnies interact with one another at work, taking a glimpse of how the infamous Playboy bunnies were, before they've been known to the world as Hef's playmates.

It is interesting to note that while the ladies are scantily-clad, the contradiction of the past and the present era is very much imminent. While the ladies in the show wear panties that are too large, it is what men on that time perceived as sexy. In comparison, today's panties are barely more than an eye patch and a piece of floss. Wow, how times have changed!

Eddie Cibrian, playing a pivotal role as aspiring district attorney Nick Dalton is a good move for the show. He's sexy and that smile --- has totally swooned me over.

The cigarette bunny Maureen, played by the gorgeous Amber Heard is a total reminiscent of the legendary sex legend Manilyn Monroe. I think her character is being patterned to that of Miss Monroe.

Laura Benanti, playing mother bunny Carol-Lynne, gave an exquisite performance as expected from her. I love her strained elegance and subdued mean-girl aura.

Too bad, the show has registered only 5 million viewers for its pilot episode.

Viewers should have given the show a chance. It is being compared to Mad Men, but it has more to offer than that.

Although I'm not quite sure what direction will the show takes. Will it be more on political intrigue or more on the Bunny life?

A real in-depth look into the girls who started the Playboy empire, who and why there were there, piques my interest far more than Nick Dalton's race for State's Attorney.

Hit shows from best-selling teen novels

The new CW series The Secret Circle joins the list of shows who have been successfully adapted from several best-selling teen novels.

With shows like Vampire Diaries, Pretty Little Liars and The Lying Game, US television networks has adapted bits and parts of the novels of the same title, but are not entirely faithful to them.

Just premiered on its third season, the Vampire Diaries has earned a cult following among youth viewers who have gone gaga over supernatural romantic stories --- thanks of course to a small film we know as Twilight.

The vampire plot is only one element of course that attracts young viewers, aside from the good looking actors portraying the Salvatore brothers and their love interest Elena.

The Secret Circle, on the other hand, follows the Vampire Diaries' successful formula of teen love stories which delve with the supernatural. It tells the story of a group of good-looking people, possessing magical powers.
While the books are heavily linked to the Salem Witch Trials, the show seems to be focusing on the love story of the characters.

Having been ordered with a another season after wrapping up its second is only enough to say that Pretty Little Liars has been a success story as well.

Earning over a million viewers for cable channel ABC Family and being shown globally, the show has earned a loyal following as it centers around four friends, Aria, Hanna, Emily, and Spencer, trying to put together the mystery of their best friend Alison's murder, while being tormented by the mysterious "A".

The show has taken several plots from the book, while ditching several others. Thus, viewers are anticipating if the the novel's "A" would be the same with that of the television show.

'Nasaan Ka Elisa' debuts solidly nationwide, weak in Mega Manila

The Philippine adaptation of Nasaan Ka Elisa? has debuted last Monday, September 12, 2011, joining ABS-CBN's primetime line-up.
As expected, the series has registered impressive numbers in the nationwide survey courtesy of Kantar Media Research. The suspense-mystery serial earned an impressive 26.7% which is good for fourth place that night, beating Munting Heredera which only registered 18.2%.

But the same can't be said with the Mega Manila survey, where the show failed to topple the dominance of Munting Heredera in the nation's largest urban concentration.

According to the People's Ratings released by AGB Nielsen, the Melissa Ricks' starrer recorded only 10% as against GMA's family drama's 13.8%.

But I must say that Nasaan Ka Elisa? is by far superior in terms of production values, execution and story with its primetime contemporaries. But one can't deny that the old yet proven formula of Munting Heredera is still endearing to the hearts of the Mega Manila viewers, making it still a force to reckon.

Mariel Rodriguez to join 'Wiltime Bigtime' in TV5?

Happy Yippe Yehey host Mariel Roderiguez is said to be negotiating a deal to join former co-host Willie Revillame's primetime variety show Wiltime Bigtime on TV5.

According to reports, the host is already discontented with her work in the fledgling ABS-CBN noontime show and is very much eager to jump ships.

In fact, a tabloid write-up has alleged the actress to be in talks with the staff of Wiltime Bigtime to join the show. If everything went fine with the negotiations, then everyone should watch out this October 22.

Even Mariel's husband is also being hounded by news that he will transfer to TV5 to join wife as his primetime series Guns and Roses is ending next week.

However, another report has denied the rumor, stating that Mariel will stay with ABS-CBN since it is with the network that she has been known as a TV host-actress. In fact, it was revealed that the sitcom starring her and husband Robin Padilla has been pushed through.

Miss Universe judge Lea Salonga ranks Miss Philippines 2nd to Angola

In an article with Philippine Daily Inquirer, Lea Salonga revealed that she ranked Miss Philippines second to Miss Angola, during her judging stint in the 2011 Miss Universe pageant.
Here's the excerpt of the Inquirer article...

On the winner Miss Angola Leila Lopes:

“I think we were all unanimous in our decision. She radiated grace and elegance from the moment she stepped on stage, and gave a great answer to her final question (which I happened to ask her; she picked my name out of the fishbowl. And that is all, lest anyone think that I made luto that process. No way.)”

How she ranked our representative Miss Shamcey Supsup:

“I ranked Shamcey Supsup second, if I’m being honest. What the TV audience saw could have been different from what we saw. And although Miss Philippines ranked highly up until the final question, we had to consider every single part of the competition. I really liked her answer as she displayed conviction and honesty. But there are nine of us judging.”

On how Shamcey represented herself:

I thought Shamcey represented our country very well. Smart, spirited, gorgeous. I wasn’t at all disappointed because she displayed what is so great about Filipino women: strength, beauty, intelligence. She should be very happy.
On the other hand, Lea Salonga clarified on Tuesday that she did notwrite the question for Miss Angola Leila Lopes in the question-and-answer portion of the Miss Universe 2011 competition.

In her Twitter account, Salonga revealed that the winning question that she happened to asked was actually written by the Miss Universeorganizers which was assigned to her.

The beautiful 25-year old Leila Lopes of Angola is the 60th Miss Universe, the 4th Black winner of the prestigious pageant, and the 4th African nation to win the crown.
Miss Angola defeated 88 girls for the precious Diamond Nexus crown.

A favorite since the start of the pageant, Miss Angola has constantly been included on several pageant sites' list, but never penetrated any single one's Top 5.

Branded as the black Barbie Doll, Miss Angola sashayed herself up to the Top 5, beating early favorites and eventually bagged the crown.

Missosology.org no. 1 pick Miss Ukraine Oleysha Stefanko is 1st runner-up, while hometown girl Miss Brazil Priscilla Machado is 2nd runner-up.

For the consecutive year, Philippines placed in the top 5 courtesy of the 3rd runner-up finish of Miss Philippines Shamcey Supsup. Miss China Zilin Luo was 4th runner-up.

Princess Snell: Pacquiao's new mistress?

Rumor has it that the world's pound for pound king has laid eyes to Kapuso starlet Princess Snell.
In a blind item posted in FashionPulis.com, the young actress is poised to bring down Manny Pacquiao's marriage to his wife, Jinkee.

If Princess Snell suddenly disappears, she won't definitely be noticed as she's not really popular.

But if you'll compare this Princess Snell with other ladies linked to Pacman, you can definitely determine Manny's taste with women.

TV Review: Nasaan Ka Elisa?

ABS-CBN's new primetime series Nasaan Ka Elisa? has definitely glued Filipino viewers on their television sets, evidenced by the effortless trending of the show in Twitter. It's lead star, Melissa Ricks, has also made it to the most talked-about topics.
The opening sequence was a visual spectacle.

The shots used are superb. It incorporated aerial shots, perhaps to establish the wealth of the Altamira family (Elisa's rich and elite clan). It has this movie opening sequence vibe, far from the usual close-up shots of our primetime teleseryes.

I was personally delighted with the fact that the series didn't start with the usual pilot of Filipino drama serials --- where the story begins with either the parents or the grandparents of the lead stars to establish the initial conflict.

What the production did is to establish the characters, and at the same time added elements to make the suspense-thriller vibe effective.

I must also commend ABS-CBN for the show's lavish location which deeply helped in making the show's filthy rich Altamira family greatly convincing. There are shows currently airing which are not really glossy and wealthy looking on TV, in contrary to what the plot is saying.

Truly, the show's characterization is one of the elements that bring in the needed mystery. Shady as they are, they will allow viewers to think and weigh-in the episodes to get to the bottom of Elisa's disappearance.

This is definitely a show to watch for this season, and I'm happy that ABS-CBN decided to air this on primetime, instead of the originally planned daytime slot. Based on the pilot alone, one shouldn't miss a single episode to know the true identity of Elisa's abductor.
