GMA's ratings woes

What's happening with GMA Network?

It seems that the Kapuso network has lost its midas touch. Many of its shows are now getting low ratings in Mega Manila which is its suppose bailiwick. Much more in the national survey, GMA shows are now getting lower figures than what its posted the same period of last year

Many shows were also getting the ax in GMA. SIS was the first to bid goodbye after eight years on the air. Now SOP will also say goodbye this Sunday and will be replaced by Party Pilipinas.

Top-rating Bitoy's Funnivest Videos lost its luster and was reformated to Bitoy's Showwwtime but to no avail as the show even got lower ratings than its predecessor. Bandaoke which replaced K! will also bid goodbye according to sources.

What do you think is the reason of the Kapuso network's ratings woes?

Did the viewers get tired of the network's programming?

It was also revealed that the network didn't counter the said offer because TV5's bid is so high.

What do you think will be Ruffa's shows in TV5? Another showbiz-oriented talk show? A drama series or a morning talk show?

'SOP' bids goodbye this Sunday

GMA's long-running Sunday noontime musical/variety show SOP will have its final act this Sunday, February 28, 2010, after being defeated by rival show ASAP XV for straight eight weeks with growing gap week by week.

The network just recently relaunched the show into SOP Fully Charged in hopes of bringing back the lost viewers but failed. The show also made several attempts to lure back its viewership through the return of the "new" Jolina Magdangal, the welcoming party of new Kapuso Claudine Baretto, and the grand return in the show by the Asia's Songbird Regine Velasquez. All failed to raise the show's low ratings.

The network will replace SOP with a new musical/variety show Party Pilipinas, still with Regine Velasquez, Ogie Alcasid, Janno Gibbs and Jaya as main hosts. The new co-hosts and mainstays are yet to be announced by the network.

Will this be a totally new show or just a revamp knowing the hosts are just the same? Any suggestions for the new show?

Marian Rivers is Mandaluyong City's top tax payer

GMA's Primetime Queen Marian Rivera is honored by the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) as one of Mandaluyong City’s Top 10 Taxpayers in the individual category.

The awarding of Mandaluyong City’s Top 10 Taxpayers is part of its week-long celebration of its 65th Liberation Day. The city will also honor its six “Ulirang Mandalenyo (Exemplary Mandaluyong residents),” in the fields of governance, business, education, arts and culture, sports, and journalism.

This means Marian Rivera is definitely earning well in the Kapuso Network. She is perhaps the highest paid talent of GMA Network.

TV Review: Agua Bendita

ABS-CBN offered another child-friendly family drama in place of the highly successful May Bukas Pa. Agua Bendita, a TV remake of Rod Santiago's komiks masterpiece may not be a high profile series as it was launched without much hype and noise but it already proved it's a force to reckon on primetime.

The show stars Andi Eigenmann who is yet to appear in the series.

For two weeks now, Agua Bendita features a fresh young talent playing twin sisters Agua and Bendita, one who is normal and the other one takes form of a liquid but looks normal if placed in the water.

The girl playing the young Agua and Bendita is another great discovery on the part of ABS-CBN.

Clearly, the talented young girl portrayed the contrasting characters of Agua and Bendita very well in a very young age.

Is it just me but I do really feel the same atmosphere in Agua Bendita with that of May Bukas Pa.

The series is definitely another show that mirror lives of Filipinos --- reflecting the power of faith and religion --- and the hipocrisy of many judging someone as evil just because one looks different from the rest of us.

I highly doubt the series will just run for several weeks as it performed very well in the national survey, even in Mega Manila as it was being pitted against Darna which will end this Firday.

The show got a simple premise, not-so stellar casting, but it prides on the convincing and great performance of the actors, from Ms Pilar Pilapil, Vina Morales, oh and John Estrada who is really great on roles of a loving father, and especially the kids who equally did a great job. That's what we call young pros in acting. If only Richard Gutierrez and Aljur Abrenica will learn from this kids.

GMA Network is most credible in AGB Nielsen Poll

GMA Network releases another poll from AGB Nielsen boasting its lead over ABS-CBN in terms of credibility with the respective network's news organization.

According to the survey, GMA Network led the qualitative survey with a credibility rating of 68.9 percent, besting its rival’s 45.7 percent. Also in the said survey, Kapuso news personalities led the list based on appeal, credibility, competence and interest to watch.

The press release also highlighted the dominance of 24 Oras against rival TV Patrol World.

But what was not clearly highlighted in said press release is the area of coverage by the said survey. Because if the said poll covers the whole Philippines, I personally doubt 24 Oras dominating TV Patrol World, being the latter as the preferred newscast in regions outside the nation's capital.

The article released is quite vague. Though it was mentioned that it was conducted in Mega Manila, the write up seems to insinuate that it covers the whole country.

Here's the said press release:

GMA 7’s 24 Oras maintained its lead over its rival primetime newscast based on the Mega Manila TV household ratings data for the period of Jan. 4 to 29 from AGB Nielsen Philippines. The primetime newscast led by 4.6 percent during the first week of January and continued to top the competition throughout the month.

GMA’s Public Affairs programs also posted remarkable leads over the competition during the entire month. Unang Hirit dominated Umagang Kay Ganda with a lead that grew from 0.6 percent to 1.6 percent by the last week of January. Reporter’s Notebook posted a 2.6 lead over The Correspondents from Jan. 4 to 8. Born To Be Wild continued to dominate Probe Profiles/Bandila the entire month, even posting a commanding 4.2 percent lead from Jan. 11 to 15. Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho, in turn, was also victorious as its ratings continued its climb the entire January.

Leading the charge is 24 Oras, posting a commanding 29.5 as against the competition’s 27.2 rating points from Jan. 11 to 15. In the succeeding weeks of Jan. 18 to 22 and 25 to 29, 24 Oras’ lead grew to 3.1 rating points.

The latest ratings data further solidifies 24 Oras’ position as the leading and most preferred newscast, powered by the viewers’ unwavering trust in the newscast and in the network.

In a quantitative survey conducted by AGB Nielsen Philippines last September, GMA scored a credibility rating of 68.9 percent, besting its rival’s 45.7 percent. In the same survey, GMA News and Public Affairs personalities topped the list based on appeal, credibility, competence and interest to watch. Jessica Soho led all anchors and reporters in terms of appeal. Mike Enriquez was considered by respondents as the most credible, while Mel Tiangco was said to be the most competent and most interesting to watch. Arnold Clavio and Vicky Morales were also consistently in the Top 5 news anchors across all measured attributes.

The findings underscore 24 Oras’ dominance over the competition. Bannered by the most formidable and credible tandem in local broadcasting today — award-winning broadcast journalists Mike Enriquez and Mel Tiangco and beefed up by the country’s most respected news team that has won local and international honors, GMA News’ 24 Oras is committed to deliver only the untainted truth.

ABS-CBN widens gap from GMA Network

After GMA Network's press release with their lead in Mega Manila in courtesy of AGB Nielsen, ABS-CBN gave their response highlighting their supremacy in the national survey from TNS.

The highlight covers the whole year 2009, with Top 15 programs for the previous year. The Kapamilya network got 14 out of the 15 top shows last year, marking an increase on its gap from nearest rival GMA Network.

The Kapamilya network also closed the gap of GMA in Mega Manila from nine percentage points to only two points by the end of 2009.

Here's the press release:

Georgina Wilson to star in Captain Barbell?

After Darna, GMA is now in the works of remaking another Pinoy superhero material, Captain Barbell which they already adpated three years ago.

This Captain Barbell reboot will still have Richard Gutierrez on the lead role.

But what excite me most with this seemingly uninteresting remake of a remake is the rumored inclusion of model Georgina Wilson, Richard's ex-girlfriend.

The gorgeous model just recently joined the Bench Lost in Summer campaign and truly she lived up to the expectations of the people --- she is truly stunning on the photos released.

Should Georgina accept the offer of the Kapuso network to join their primetime, she will surely become the network's new Telebabad gem.

'Agua Bendita' performs well: Will ABS-CBN extend this like Santino?

Looks like ABS-CBN is happy with the initial reception with its new primetime series Agua Bendita.

The TV adaptation of Rod Santiago's komiks masterpiece registered an impressive 31.8% in Mega Manila courtesy of AGB, settling on the second place after Darna. What more impressive is it's national figures which topped primetime in courtesy of its 37.7%.

With this good figures, I smell another extension for the show which was planned to run for the rest of February only as Angel Locsin's Kokey will replace it by March.

But since the show is performing well, it might get the extension and the Angel Locsin series might be deferred again indefinitely.

Angel's fans might get mad if ABS-CBN will extend Agua Bendita instead of airing Kokey as originally planned.

What if ABS-CBN extend Agua Bendita, they should this instead:

5:45 Tanging Yaman
6:15 TV Patrol World
7:30 Kokey at Ako
8:10 Agua Bendita
8:50 Rubi
9:30 Kung Tayo'y Magkakalayo

GMA's First Time defeated Tanging Yaman by an impressive 5.1% margin. That's an impressive feat thinking the lead stars are just teens and newbies, as against the much established Erich Gonzales starrer.

But over-all, it seems that ABS-CBN got a healthier primetime condition as most of it's shows are hitting the 30s, especially PBB amidst its very late timeslot. Habang May Buhay is also performing impressively, though it only edged Full House by .10%.

TV Review: Diz is it --- trash TV!

I had big expectations for GMA's new morning variety show which was being produced by TAPE Inc, the same outfit behind the much successful and long-running noontime variety show Eat Bulaga.

As part of my passion that its blogging about Filipino TV, I opted to watch the pilot episode of Diz is it, and man I should have just watched other channels or just turn off my TV than watching this crap show everyday.

It's a cheap version of Showtime. The set is dry and small, the performances are bland, the spiels are corny and the hosts --- totally unwatchable.

It's like a hybrid of Eat Bulaga and SOP --- Eat Bulaga being a variety and SOP for its fake laugh tracks and audience cheers.

GMA should have produced something different than selling the time slot to TAPE and had a show which is truly painful to watch. The show is truly very trying hard, like a social climber trying to get himself a spot in the high echelon of the society.

Dear readers, stick with Showtime and don't waste your time with this one!

Miss Earth 2010 on Vietnam?

Good news to Miss Earth pageant fans!

On its 10th year, the youngest and fastest growing grand slam pageant Miss Earth which is based in the Philippines is reported to be staged on Vietnam this year.

Yes! Vietnam, the country which hosted Miss Universe 2008 and also the chosen venue for the Miss World 2010. But new reports came that sponsors of the 2010 Miss World backed out and the oldest international pageant is reported to return to Sanya, China which hosted it already for four years already --- 2003 to 2005 and on 2007.

This is definitely a great news for the fans of the pageant, as this would be the first time Miss Earth will be staged in another country. More media mileage please!

Among the four international pageants, Miss Earth has been the most bashed one, being amateurish on its coronation night production wise. It's not yet comparable with Miss World and Miss Universe, not even with Miss International.

But one can't deny that the large number of participation from different countries, that's more than 80 countries, makes Miss Earth one of the most important pageants. One could contribute this to the growing global awareness on conserving our planet and saving Mother Earth.

The Miss Earth Organization and Carousel Productions are yet to issue official statements on the reports of Miss Earth coming to Vietnam, in the province of Nha Trang, but a Vietnamese newspaper already reported that a contract signing between Miss Earth officials and the sponsors took place in a ceremony in a hotel in Saigon.

TV Review: 'First Time'

Watching the pilot of GMA's new pre-primetime show First Time is like a reminiscent of my high school --- being young and innocent and the sweetness of falling in love for the first time. The show is like a breather with its predecessor Ikaw Sana which is more of a heavy drama with story that doesn't pose any direction. Watching First Time, it's like watching a Korean series about teens falling in love for the first time.

The show is glossy aesthetically, like most CW shows

The show's main characters are rich kids and the pilot scenes showed the two young lead stars meeting in a high class resort. The shots were great. It's totally far from its predecessor. Andoy Ranay seemed changed his style. I can't see any resemblance with his prior projects on ABS-CBN like Prinsesa ng Banyera.

The acting is also good. Barbie and Joshua are brilliant young actors who both had delivered the required emotions to make viewers go gaga. There is this "kilig" factor which I think is good for the show. Many shows who pair different stars failed on this arena --- the undeniable chemistry between the lead stars.

The supporting cast is also good. From the parents and the young stars yet to appear on the show are quite promising. No big stars included but I think that is good. Relying on big stars for a show doesn't always equate success on the ratings game. Free TV is much different with movies, and the bankability of a star is tested differently on the boobtube and on the silver screen.

Good job to the Kapuso network. Aside from being an original series, the show is also fresh and something alternative to the soap opera-style of rival Tanging Yaman. I think the show could give the Erich Gonzales starrer a run for its money.

TV Review: Habang May Buhay spells another great Filipino drama

It's truly worthy of the long wait. Judy Ann Santos' Habang May Buhay has alreasy premiered, and it gave ABS-CBN good numbers for primetime, beating GMA's Full House both in Mega Manila and in the nationwide survey.

Though it seemed awkward for its first two episodes since you can't find something new. The scene wherein Gina Alajar who played Judy Ann's mother rushed to aid victims of a vehicular accident, you can remember Judy Ann's previous soap opera, the top-rating Esperanza.

The story is also not genuinely original though.

But when Judy Ann first appeared and the subsequent episodes with the Teleserye Queen, it was a surreal experience. Like watching your childhood hero in flesh.

The confrontation scene with Judy Ann and her cousin and mean aunt truly gave me goosebumps. I can't help myself but be carried away by the emotions. Like what I have said before, Juday's acting is truly perfect --- nothing over the board and definitely didn't fall short.

It may not as big as other teleseryes, the plot may not be an epic like others, but surely this one will leave a mark on primetime. The show is a first on Philippine primetime, a medical-themed drama with the one and only queen on the lead.

Though technically the show flawed on several instances, I still commend Habang May Buhay as an eye-opener for its viewers. It portrays the hardships and difficulties of the nursing profession while showing the values on hard-work, perseverance and love on family.

After so many Korean remakes and romance dramas, a touching drama on family and profession is a breath of fresh air.
