'Habang May Buhay' premieres this Monday: Are you excited?

Roughly three years in the making, Judy Ann Santos' medical drama Habang May Buhay will finally premiere on ABS-CBN's primetime block after Kung Tayo'y Magkakalayo.
This would be a first of its kind in the country's television landscape, a story which will revolve around the joys and hardships of a Filipina nurse. Of course, this will include romance, being a soap opera.

Watching the trailer, one could already judge that their is depth on the plot and the actors included in the cast are all good.

Maybe, they are all pressured since they are working with one of the industry's best actresses. And she's not just an award-winning actress, she's a superstar for Pete's sake.

Of the many shows ABS-CBN is offering this quarter of the year, which obviously a part of its celebration of the 60 years of Philippine Soap Opera, I am most excited with Habang May Buhay.

One because I already missed a top caliber acting on primetime. Two because this will reunite two soap opera icons, the bida (Judy Ann Santos) and the kontrabida, Gladys Reyes.

Third, Derek Ramsay is there. He's soOo hot and having him 5 nights a week is already a treat.

Lastly, I saw in the trailer that the series holds emotions so strong that I'm already teary-eyed on the trailer, how much more if I will watch it.

PBB Double Up Updates; Melai wins slot for the Big Four

Housemate Melai or Melissa Cantiveros has secured the first slot in the Big Four after beating fellow housemates Tibo and Paul Jake in an endurance challenge given by Kuya.

Melai reportedly endured 10-long hours of standing in the platform just to make it sure that she will be included in the four remaining housemates for the Big Night this February 15, 2009.

Even without this win, Melai is definitely a sure shot for the Big Four, having the biggest fanbase in the hit reality show of ABS-CBN. In fact, the high ratings attributed to the show is being credited to the Gen. Santos City native and her loveteam Jason.

Rubi trailer - Are you excited?

ABS-CBN has finally shown the trailer of its upcoming TV remake of the Mexican soap opera Rubi.

The story of the series will revolve on the protagonist who will antagonize the people around her, hence, Rubi is tagged as the "bidang-kontrabida".

Based from the trailer, it seems that ABS-CBN made some revisions in the story. It seems like Rubi and Maribel(Shaina Magdayao), are half-sisters.

Diether Ocampo playing the hunky Hector is a good choice. The original actor who played the said role is uberly hot Sebastian Rulli. I still have doubts with Jake Cuenca playing Rubi's true love Alejandro.

Shaina Magdayao as the limp Maribel is a good choice. This is a good platform to test Shaina in primetime for lead roles in the future.

And Angelica Panganiban as the "malditang" Rubi? No doubt about it. As Scarlet in Iisa Pa Lamang, she already showed that she's tailor-made for the coveted role. The Mexican reboot played by Barbara Mori, portrayed Rubi as a badass social-climbing gold digger bitch with a strong face.

However, the original Rubi, which is a Mexican film, portrayed Rubi as a vicious woman with an angelic face. Angelica falls in the film version of Rubi, angelic face yet a very deceitful woman.

Are you excited with Rubi?

PBB Double Up Updates: Jason, Melai, Paul Jake, Johan, Kath nominees for eviction

For the first time, loveteam Melason are nominated at the same time for eviction from the PBB House as the reality series hits its last two weeks.

Jason, who made a record of 6 nominations was given by Tibo automatic nomination as the latter is this week's Head of Households. This also marks Melai's second time to be up for eviction.

Joining the Melason in the nominees list are Paul Jake Castillo, Kath Lopeña and Johan Santos.

With Melai and Jason both nominated for eviction, I'm sure this week will set a record high of the numbet of votes. Obviously, the Melason loveteam is comprised by the two most popular housemates of this season.

Avatar is to take over Titanic's box-office records

It is only a matter of time now before Avatar topples Titanic in the box-office records as the highest grossing film of all time.

Trough the weekend of January 23, Avatar took a whooping worldwide box office total of $1.841 billion. James Cameroon's Titanic's worldwide box office total was $1.843 billion.

One has to think the last two million will be reached by Monday, Jan. 25, making Avatar the highest-grossing international movie of all time.

Domestically, Avatar is at $552.8 million, still almost $50 million shy of Titanic's $600 million domestic box office take. Avatar took home $36 million the weekend of Jan. 23. If that can hold steady the next two weekends, Avatar should take the domestic title within two weeks.

Avatar's Jan. 23 box office win makes it the first movie since Titanic to rule the box office for six straight weeks.

TV Review: 'Kung Tayo'y Magkakalayo' nothing new but of high quality!

ABS-CBN's new primetime soap opera Kung Tayo'y Magkakalayo just had its successful first week, establishing the plot and the main characters to whom the story will revolve, the story of a love which will defy all the rules.

The pilot episode is very much simple. Nothing explosive. No earthquakes (remember Pangarap na Bituin?). Nothing of great visual spectacle. Just scenes establishing the main characters, their roles in the story.

Watching the pilot, viewers can get acquainted with the roles of Celine, Steve, Frank, Astrud and Petulah. Kris Aquino's performance is nothing stellar. Her emotions are all the same, from one scene to another. Ms. Gina Pareño's performance is also OK, since she's not yet involved in a more intense scene.

Watching Albert Martinez is like watching May Bukas Pa. He's acting is no different than his Mayor Enrique role in the hit teleserye. Also is with Ms. Jacklyn Jose. I must say the two's acting are limited, somewhat a boxed performance. You can't see no distinction from their previous roles.

Try to compare Jacklyn Jose in Kung Tayo'y Magkakalayo and Nagsimula sa Puso and see the difference. None right?

Coco Martin is truly a very good actor, no, he's a genius in acting. The portrayal of a person with a bipolar disorder is pretty convincing.

And the biggest question is: Did Gabby Concepcion had botox?

His face seldom moves and as a viewer, I was not carried away in the scene where the casket of his wife and supposed-to-be child arrived in the airport.

I guess Gabby must work double hard to get back his former caliber in acting, because in this soap and in Dahil May Isang Ikaw, he's very stiff.

And the most awaited part, Kim and Gerald's performance in the soap is exceptional especially skinny Kim.

Kim Chiu's take of a rebel daughter is truly commendable. It's a different Kim this time, far from her soft spoken Audrey and other teeny-bopper roles before.

Gerald, well, he's really good in expressing emotions. The scene where he cried after another nightmare during a shootout where his parents were killed is truly engaging. As a viewer, you can't help but sympathize on his plight as an orphan.

Lastly, the soap opera offers nothing new. But the camera shots, cinematography, the seamless transition of scenes and the not-so-stellar but definitely not mediocre (The Last Prince!) performance of the cast made this new show worthy of our time.

With its high ratings, Kung Tayo'y Magkakalayo is truly another hit from ABS-CBN. I just hope the plot thickens to give way to stellar performances from its award-winning cast.

'Darna' is no. 1, 'Kung Tayo'y Magkakalayo' is 2nd - Mega Manila (January 20, 2009)

Mega Manila ratings is again in a see-saw scenario, with shows from rival networks alternately winning their timeslots.

On Tuesday, Darna and The Last Prince from GMA tied on the no. 1 spot in courtesy of their 34.1% rating.

ABS-CBN's new telserye Kung Tayo'y Magkakalayo is second 32.1%.

But on the next day, the appearance of Kimerald in the series trumped rival show occupying the second spot in primetime and leading all kapamilya shows that night.

We opted to remove Starstruck Shoutout from the list since it is unfair to pity a show from ABS-CBN wit this one since it only run for 5 minutes, at time against commercials.

If this one is being rated, why not also place PBB Double Up Updates?

Is this another ploy to make it appear that GMA got bigger ratings because with its length, the Starstruck update is not categorically a show but more on a TV plug!

Again, we would like reiterate that Daisy Siete is against the run of Wowowee and not with Nagsimula sa Puso. In fact, we actually watched TV last Wednesday and when Nagsimula Sa Puso started Iza Calzado's Kaya Kong Abutin ang Langit has already begun. So if you average Eat Bulaga and Daisy Siete, Wowowee actually won the timeslot since it run longer and cover the two shows. What do you think?

Non-Primetime:
Kapuso Movie Festival 16.6% vs. Showtime 17%;
Eat Bulaga 24.4%, Daisy Siete 15.6% vs. Wowowee 17.7%;
Kaya Kong Abutin ang Langit 15.2% vs. Nagsimula sa Puso 14.4%;
Tinik sa Dibdib 16.5% vs. Maria de Jesus 10%;
Ripley’s Believe It or Not 8.8% vs. Banana Split 10.1% at PBB Uber 12%;
Family Feud 11.6% vs. Precious Hearts 15.2%;

Primetime:
Ikaw Sana 17.5% vs. Tanging Yaman 19.4%;
24 Oras 29% vs. TV Patrol 26.8%;
Darna 32.3% vs. May Bukas Pa 28.9%;
The Last Prince 28.6% vs. Kung Tayo’y Magkakalayo 30.4%;
Full House 26.7% vs. PBB Double Up 29.7%;
Queen Seon Deok 21.6% vs. Boys Over Flowers 20.1%;
Saksi 12.4% vs. Showbiz News Ngayon 10.3%.

Ricky Lo banned on ABS-CBN!

Philippine Star columnist and Entertainment editor Ricky Lo is banned from the vicinity of ABS-CBN. This was learned by the respected columnist while on his way to attend the press conference of Star Cinema's upcoming movie Paano na Kaya?.

Ricky Lo received a call from one of the organizers of the said press conference informing him that he is no longer welcome to any Star Magic event now and in the future. Star Magic is the talent management arm of the network.

Allegedly, Johnny Manahan, Star Magic's head is the one behind the order.

This is quite surprising since Ricky Lo is one of the industry's most respected writers and entertainment columnists.

So what might be reason of this action by the network?

Perhaps the recent write-ups of Ricky on the marital problems of the network's biggest talent Kris Aquino. Or maybe because Ricky works for the rival network, hosting GMA's weekly showbiz talk show Startalk.

Why not make 'SIS' a latenight talk show?

The demise of the eight-year old morning show of GMA Network hosted by Gelli de Belen, Carmina Villaroel and Janice de Belen is a sad news, especially to its longtime loyal viewers.

But the bigger dilemma here is that, for years, SIS has been a platform for various GMA Network talents to promote their new projects, albums and concerts.

Now that it finally ended, GMA lost its only daily talk-variety show like the rival network which decided to get rid the said format on its entire line-up.

So why not turn the daily morning show into a late night talk-variety show just like in the US with the Tonight Show of Jay Leno and Late Show with David Letterman.

The format may not be successful for now, take for instance TV5's Jojo A. All The Way, but why not give it a try.

SIS is not totally a talk show. In fact, it is a hybrid of a variety show with less talk. So it may pull high viewers, plus it's on GMA. Not too much risk isn't it?

Why not evacuate Bubble Gang and SRO Cinemaserye on weekends and put Saksi on the earlier 11pm time slot to be followed by the network's highly respected Public Affairs block on 11:30pm then SIS by midnight.

What do you think?

Top Ten Most Expensive Movies Of All Time

The production cost of movies never guarantee box-office success. But many of the top grossing films were also shot with sky-rocketing budget.

Avatar, which cost $310 million to make and its worldwide box office take at the moment is $1,435,049,673 and still counting will be third on the list but before its inclusion in the list, here's the Top Ten Most Expensive Movies Of All Time:

10. Quantum of Solace
Released in 2008, this is arguably the best sequel of all the James Bond movies. Quantum of Solace was a major hit at the box office and also fared well with the critics. The total cost involved in making this movie was estimated to be around $230 million. The total amount spent was clearly visible in the action-sets as well as the most exotic locations where the movie was shot. Worldwide Box Office: $586,090,727

9. Spider-Man 2
This movie was released in the year 2004. The sequel proved to be in no way lesser than the first part. In fact, both were said to be equally balanced and received good crowd appreciation. The cost of the movie was somewhere around $231.6 million. This enormous amount of money was mainly spent on the special effects that are the soul of this movie. Worldwide Box Office: $783,766,341

8. King Kong
This super movie was released all over the world in the year 2005. The latest King Kong was a classic movie remake. Peter Jackson’s courage has to be appreciated, as he chose to remake a movie that had flopped at the box office 30 years ago. The budget shot up to about $231.9 million, but the movie wasn’t a big hit. Worldwide Box Office: $550,517,357

7. Terminator 3 – Rise of the Machines
This movie released in 2003 came to a total cost of $237.8 million. Out of the entire cost, a part of it was dedicated to the story and the rights while even more was spent on visual effects and also talent. Worldwide Box Office: $433,371,112

6. Waterworld
Released back in 1995, this film definitely came with a huge final product cost. The total cost turned out to be somewhere around $251.2 million. The reason for this sky-height cost is the fact that about 18 months of the film shoot took place in water, which is bound to cost more than the dry land shooting. Worldwide Box Office: $264,218,220

5. Spider Man 3
It was released in the year 2007 and it didn’t manage to pull off as big of a response from the audience like the first two films in the series. In fact, this second sequel cost more than the first sequel. The main reason for this exorbitant $272.6 million cost is the numerous special effects that were a necessity to the third Spider Man, due to the presence of more super villains. Worldwide Box Office: $890,871,626

4. Titanic
Released in 1997, the cost on this film went up to about $272.6 million. It performed very well in the box office, though, and broke some attendance records at the time. The major section of the cost was devoted to re-building the titanic with an exquisite appearance to make it identical to the original ill-fated ship. Worldwide Box Office: $1,842,879,955

3. Superman Returns
This film came out in 2006 and was potentially weak to replace its predecessors. The total cost went up to $294.6 million, though, so it definitely came out with a bang. Worldwide Box Office: $391,081,192

2. Cleopatra
This movie was released in 1963 and had a final cost of about $314.6 million. Although it was the second most expensive movie ever made, it was commercially a flop of a film that served as proof of how things can still go wrong in spite of spending massive money. US Box Office: $57,777,778

1. Pirates of the Caribbean – At World’s End
This film was released in 2007 and received good response from the audience, not so much because of a strong story line, but more because of the colourful settings and costumes. The final product cost was about $316.6 million. Worldwide Box Office: $960,996,492

'George and Cecil' to bid goodbye on February 15?

According to a report we had received, the kapamilya sitcom George and Cecil top-billed by Judy Ann Santos and husband Ryan Agoncillo will bid its farewell this February 15 upon the premiere of the network's newest talent-reality show Pilipinas Got Talent. This is truly a sad news amongst the shows solid fans.

The sitcom may not be considered as a phenomenal hit, its ratings is still strong as it consistently beat rival shows from GMA.

George and Cecil is definitely one of the best written and best acted sitcom in the history of Philippine television. It shied away from the common slapstick tendency of Pinoy sitcoms.

Instead, the show relied heavily on the characters' wit and catchy funny lines.

ABS-CBN should think twice before axing the show since this is the only sitcom in their current lineup. A later timeslot could suit the show, perhaps against the fledgling and truly unfunny Marian Rivera-Manny Pacquiao sitcom.

Jaya expresses discontent with new 'SOP'

In an interview with Pep.ph, singer/TV host Jaya expressed her discontent with the reformat of the 13-year old noontime musical variety show.

"We are going through something. Kaming mga talents, we're as confused as whoever. Kasi binago 'yong format, so hindi talaga namin alam kung anong pakiramdam ng viewers. Let's face it, it's not really rating as well as it used to."

She is also hoping that in time, the show will be able to bring back it's old viewers. Also, she cited that the rival show ASAP XV is doing well in the ratings because it is nice. She also admitted that she watches the rival program to know its difference from SOP.

"We used to sing well on put-together numbers. We used to have Basil [Valdez] come in, we used to have tiny orchestra. Bigay mo lang kung anong hindi makita ng tao sa Araneta [Coliseum] o ibang concert venues. Hindi ko din alam kung anong mali. Basta kami, we try to do our best na lang."

SOP trails behind ABS-CBN's 15-year old musical variety show in the national survey, and even in Mega Manila where GMA got the upperhand.

Kris Aquino versus Sharon Cuneta

Two of the country's biggest stars and ABS-CBN's most prized talents are now being pitted with each other, as the two already have their own magazines named after them under the network's publishing arm.

Kris Aquino was the first one launched years ago with her K Magazine. The TV host-actress serves as the editor-in-chief of the magazine and personally writes her column.

The Mega Star Sharon Cuneta has recently launched her own magazine, Sharon at Home. The actress also write in the magazine, which is about what others don't know much about Sharon --- her being a very good home-maker.

But many have already compared the two magazines and the stars behind it. How true that Kris Aquino's write-ups do have more heart than Sharon's?

Does this mean Kris is more "honest" and "true" than the Mega Star?

PBB Double Up Updates: Rica Paras thinks the male housemates 'Pa-yummy!'

Transgender ex-housemate Rica Paras talked about her impressions about the remaining male housemates in an interview with ABS-CBN.com.

“Oh my God! Over! Ang mga boys naman ng PBB Double Up ay may kanya-kanyang charm, depende sa ating panlasa. Pa-yummy sila lahat at alam nila ‘yan!” exclaimed by the Math Goddess from Bacolod.

These are her no holds-barred descriptions with the PBB Boys:

Rob Stumvoll
“Kung gusto mo ng liberated, go for Rob (the Fil-Austrian housemate) kasi foreigner, ha ha ha!” Rica and Rob succeeded in their weekly task to make all the housemates believe that they were a couple. However, Rob became distant after the task, something which Rica felt sad about.

Johan Santos
“Kung gusto mong mag-feeling na parang cougar ka, go for Johan! Kita mo si Johan, baby-faced, makinis, pero ang katawang talagang pang-kama! Kapag nakikita ko siya I can’t help but to think of dirty things. Iniisip ko na nakahubad na siya sa harap ko. Ang kinis at macho ni Johan.” Rica giggled as she talked about Johan, her biggest crush among all the boys.

Paul Jake Castillo
“Si Paul Jake wala kang itatapon sa katawan niya. Ultimo pawis niya iko-collect mo. Ang bango ng pawis ni Paul Jake, sobra!”

Hermes Bautista
“Kung gusto mo nang walang effort, go for Hermes. ‘Yung makikipag-flirt ka pero gusto mo nang effortless reaction, kay Hermes ‘yan! Easy to get siya, ha ha ha! Kapag naisip mo, ‘Gusto ko ng lalaki pero ayokong umeffort! Hermes, come here!’ Ganun! First time naming magkita hinalikan na agad ako. Hindi pa nga niya yata alam ‘yung gender ko. Kaya siguro tingin ng mga tao siya ang pinaka-flirt kasi expressive siya. I think he uses his charm to attract girls.

Sa mga taong gusto ng cariño-brutal, leather straps, latigo, posas, lagare, martilyo, and everything, go for Jason!”

Tibo Jumalon

TV Review: 'Tanging Yaman' is a timely drama

ABS-CBN has finally succeeded on building the 6PM slot for a soap opera. The timeslot was formerly occupied by Asian imports and popular game shows.

Katorse ruled the said timeslot and after its run, ABS-CBN launched a political drama which depicts the life of those in power, of a Philippine president.

The premise and the plot is truly new. Though it is not the first show to have portrayed a Philippine president and his (or her) family, Tanging Yaman brought a more detailed depiction putting more emphasis on presidential protocols, the corruption among the cabinet members, the twisted ways of some politicians in power as effectively portrayed by Leo Martinez.

The president is played by Rowell Santiago and the First Lady is is being portrayed by Agot Isidro. The two are one of the industry's underrated actors and their inclusion in the teleserye is a good news.

Their perfomance are just perfect, not overboard, just what is needed. Every scenes are shot with great precision, scenes that you know are relevant in the show's storytelling.

Many Filipino shows had suffered in quality due to the inclusion of scenes which are not relevant in the flow of the story, scenes that were shot for the sake of producing an episode to be aired. Tanging Yaman didn't have that kind of problem so far.

I admire the fact that most of the stars in the show are not that huge in comparison with that of Kung Tayo'y Magkakalayo and Habang May Buhay. But their performances are great.

Even the young stars in the show: Erich Gonzales, Enchong Dee, Melissa Ricks, Matt Evans and Ejay Falcon are good on their respective roles. I must say all of them have greatly improved in the acting department, even Ejay Falcon.

Ejay even fared better in Tanging Yaman than Aljur Abrenica in The Last Prince. The latter was totally stiff and the way he showed his emotions is truly painful to watch.

Basing on the quality of this teleserye, I must Tanging Yaman deserves the 8:30pm slot, that is being occupied by Kung Tayo'y Magkakalayo. Love the acting and the show itself is well-written. The shots, especially those in the supposed to be Malacañang is also highly commendable. Kudos to the directors, casts and the creative team behind this timely drama.

To answer why its timely! Heloooo...the May 2010 Presidential Elections is fast approaching!LOL...

PBB Double Up Update: Rica to Cathy "I don't like you!"

This week, ex-housemates were asked to return and occupy the other house as part of 'Resbak Attack'.

Cathy, who was alone in the other house, was surprised to see her old housemates.

But what surprised the audience more is ex-housemate Rica distanced herself from Cathy.

The two were very close then, way back the start of the season with other housemates, Melissa and Carol.

But when Rica was evicted, she might have discovered that Cathy has constantly nominated her until her eventual eviction from the house.

She returned to Cathy the shirt the latter had given her.

When Cathy asked Rica why she's returning the shirt, Rica calmly answered "I don't like you!".

That's kinda...in your face!!!

Though still civil, Rica further said that she can't be friends with Cathy.

Are you a Team Cathy or Team Rica? Let the cat-fight begin...

First Read: 'Showtime' returns tomorrow

Just before the show ended today, Showtime and Magpasikat director Bobet Vidanes intercepted hosts Vhong Navarro, Anne Curtis, Kim Atienza, and Vice Ganda with a brown envelope on his hands.

Shrieks and shout came from the studio audience who are seemingly aware of what will happen next.

Direk Bobet had Bong Osorio, ABS-CBN's Corporate Communications head read the content of the brown envelope.

Bong Osorio read the order received by the lawyers of ABS-CBN from the Court of Appeals which had given a 60-day Temporary Restraining Order against the preventive suspension given by the MTRCB against Showtime.

Everyone in the audience cheered while the show's director and hosts were filled with tears of joy, as it was further announced that Showtime will return tomorrow.
