Manny Pangilinan plans future of TV5

During the 21st Advertising Congress, TV5's new owner and chairman Manny Pangilinan of the PLDT-SMART corporate giant presented the upcoming business strategy of the no. 3 network. It was observed that the said strategy resembles that of the two competing media giants --- ABS-CBN and GMA Network.

It was not a secret that Manny Pangilinan longed dream of owning a television network.

TV5 has now the advantages in financial resources. The third placer network has now the capability of producing more shows and improve its content.

In the Ad Congress, Mr. Pangilinan laid out the following plans and goals for TV5:

* Use high-def production equipment, tapeless digital system, and improve their transmission through more powerful transmitters nationwide.

* Beef up their news department five times bigger than it is now, and not only come out with new shows.

* Develop their own talents.

* Put up their own film division and produce more movies than the combined output of the two leading networks now.

TV5 is now powered by MediaQuest, the investee company of PLDT's Beneficial Trust Fund that first launched mobile TV in the country with MyTV, as well as PLDT's Watchpad and Smart's Sandbox. It also owns Cignal, the first digital direct to home satellite service with high definition nationwide.

The TV5 team is now headed by President-CEO Ray Espinosa and EVP and COO Roberto V. Barreiro. Will this new leadership beat ABS-CBN and GMA from the top slot they both claim or continue to settle for the third spot where TV5 is now?

What model will TV5 follow? The Filipino Monday-Friday serial format in primetime or the American model of hour long series which varies each day?Let's see...

How come ABS-CBN didn't stop Claudine Barretto in transferring?

For years, Claudine Barretto has been considered as the biggest star of ABS-CBN's talent arm Star Magic.

With strings of hit TV shows and blockbuster films under her belt, Claudine Baretto reigned and competed against other ABS-CBN talents Judy Ann Santos and Kristine Hermosa for the primetime throne.

A big star as she is, who oh why ABS-CBN did not offer Claudine Barretto a show to stop her from jumping the ship like what they gave Judy Ann Santos (a sitcom George and Cecil)?

Does the network believe Claudine Barretto is not a hot item anymore? Or is this part of the ABS-CBN's budget scrimping campaign since Ms. Barretto's talent fee is way higher than stars like Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson?

ABS-CBN crowns Judy Ann Santos as Teleserye Queen: Do you agree?

Just after the sudden transfer of Claudine Baretto to GMA Network, Judy Ann Santos was left as the sole unofficial queen of the Kapamilya network.

But in a TV plug released by ABS-CBN for its new primetime offering Habang May Buhay topbilled by Santos, the network declared that the young Superstar is indeed the Queen of Philippine Soap Opera, popularly known as teleserye, as well as the unofficial declaration that the actress is also the Queen of the network.

This is also in time with the network's celebration of the 60th Anniversary of Philippine Soap Opera. This is the genre which ABS-CBN holds the distinction of producing the country's most popular, highly acclaimed and internationally marketed serials.

With this actions, do you agree with ABS-CBN for giving Judy Ann Santos the Teleserye Queen crown?

Will the 'Full House' remake match the original?

This is the last week of GMA's low rated primetime teleserye Rosalinda and the Kapuso Network slated the return of Richard Gutierrez and Heart Evangelista in primetime this Monday as Full House will replace the vacated slot of the Mexicanovela remake.

Heart and Richard already paired in the successful sci-fi drama Codename: Asero. After their brief team up, Richard was paired with Rhian Ramos in the Philippine adaptation of Zorro while Heart successfully reigned in primetime via her title role Luna Mystika.

Full House marks the reunion of GMA's Primetime King and the 2009 FAMAS Best Actress.

But the question is...will Richard and Heart live up to the high expectations of viewers from them, especially that Full House was the highest rated Korean seris aired in the country.

Will the two lead stars match the original Full House, if not surpass the comic and the "kilig" moments?

Let's just see. But my fingers are crossing! I'm a fan of the Korean seris, and I'm hoping that GMA would stick to the core conpcept of the series and not again over-Filipinize the said material.

2009 CNN Heroes: Ordinary Filipino man, extraordinary impact

Anderson Cooper hosted the third annual "CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute".
Performing at the event were musicians Carrie Underwood, Maxwell and Leona Lewis. Presenters include Nicole Kidman, Kate Hudson, Neil Patrick Harris, Pierce Brosnan, Dwayne Johnson, Eva Mendes, Randy Jackson, Greg Kinnear, George Lopez and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

Efren Peñaflorida was named the 2009 Hero of the Year for starting a "pushcart classroom" in the Philippines to bring education to poor children as an alternative to gang membership.

The Pinoy hero received $100,000 to continue his work with his group, Dynamic Teen Company. Aside from it, Peñaflorida already got $25,000 for his inclusion in the Top 10 CNN Heroes.

Peñaflorida was chosen from the Top 10 as he received 2.75 million online votes, the highest among all the finalists.

“Our planet is filled with heroes, young and old, rich and poor, man, woman of different colors, shapes and sizes. We are one great tapestry,” Peñaflorida said.

“Each person has a hidden hero within, you just have to look inside you and search it in your heart, and be the hero to the next one in need.”

He's not a celebrity in the Philippines. Peñaflorida is just a common "tao", unheard until his win in the CNN Heroes. He is one of us, walking along the sidewalks, witnessing the harsh realities of our society, the sprawling poverty and the injustices and oppression to the poor and unlearned.

Simple and common as he is, Efren Peñaflorida made a great impact towards the world, of how his small efforts of bringing change to his community would lead for others to be inspired and motivated, especially those who have the capacity to help and share.

SOP's new set --- grand and worldclass!

It reminds me of Britain's The X Factor, though a little short in terms of the lighting effects, GMA has successfully relaunched its fledgling Sunday musical variety SOP to address its weak performance in the ratings game.

ABS-CBN's ASAP has been continuously beating SOP directly in the ass not only nationwide but in Mega Manila as well, GMA's so-called bailiwick.

The set was definitely improved. Its now a musical show that could compete head to head with ASAP, unlike the old days when SOP was trashy and resembles a barrio fiesta.

So what do you think about the changes in SOP? Do you like it or not? Would you stick to GMA every Sunday noon?

ABS-CBN releases ASAP XV plug

GMA's weekly musical variety show SOP was relaunched last Sunday to save its eroding viewers due to stiff competition from ABS-CBN's ASAP.

The relaunch did improve SOP dramatically. It now seems can be able to compete head to head with ASAP in terms of the set and the production numbers.

But ASAP won't just sit on its laurels. The noontime musical extravaganza will also launch it's 15 anniversary through ASAP XV.

A TV plug was aired showcasing the big names and stars in the show. The plug is indeed awesome! It resembles US' ABC Fall Season preview featuring the casts of their popular shows.

'Lovers in Paris','Stairway to Heaven' tight contest for gold

Primetime TV has been in a tight contest in the timeslot occupied by two Philippine remakes of popular Korean series which was previously aired on ABS-CBN and GMA.

ABS-CBN's Lovers in Paris and GMA's Stairway to Heaven has been in a tight competition for ratings supremacy.

The GMA show has been posing a serious threat to ABS-CBN since this is the only Kapuso show that from time to time closely inching the gap with its rival Kapamilya show in the nationwide race.

The two shows are definitely on the race track of grabbing the
gold medal.

But why bother when you can already purchase
gold coins and gold bullion online.

The
gold coin went to Stairway to Heaven when it registered 28.4% in the TNS nationwide survey while Lovers in Paris only got 27.5%. But the bullion went back to Lovers in Paris as it was able to regain its lead but only with a small margin as both koreanovela remake from rival stations are in a tight contest nationwide.

Seen: Angel Locsin's evening gown in International Emmy

Kapamilya Primetime Queen Angel Locsin is gorgeous in her red carpet evening gown made by Filipino designer Michael Cinco, the one who also designed the evening gown of Miss Earth First Runner Up and Miss Philippines Earth 2009 Sandra Seifert.
Angel truly looked glamorous ala Hollywood glam. The gown is regal and had this surreal. If only Michael Cinco designed the evening gowns of Philippine representatives at the Miss Universe and Miss World, I think our candidates could fare well.

Although Angel Locsin didn't win the Best Actress trophy, being one of the four nominees is already a great feat still unmatched by actresses of her generation.

Julie Walters of the United Kingdom brought the Best Actress trophy from her performance in A Short Stay in Switzerland of BBC.

ABS-CBN's another entry Kahit Isang Saglit in the Best Telenovela Category also failed to topple the competition. Brazil's India - A Love Story from TV Globo won.

Unlike its rival network, GMA already have lined up shows to replace its already airing ones. In fact, no canned show was included on its stable while ABS-CBn got so many shows already canned but not yet aired.

To kick off the year, the Kapuso network will launch a new fantaserye The Last Prince topbilled by Aljur Abrenica and Kris Bernal.

This will be the second primetime show which the loveteam will topbill. The first one has received a lukewarm reception from the audience.

Their new fantaserye promises to keep the Kapuso legacy in terms of making impressive and top rating programs in the said genre.

This December, the network will also launch a primetime mini-seris Sana Ngayong Pasko. The show will run for only five weeks and will be starred by respected actress Susan Roces.

The network is also currently preparing a teenage primetime drama First Luv to be topbilled by Barbie Forteza and Joshua Dionisio, the teen actors who played the young Rhian Ramos and Dingdong Dantes in Stairway to Heaven.

Regina Velasquez will also return to primetime with a musical drama series which is tentatively entitled Diva.

Two new SineNovela will also be launched on the first quarter of 2010. Jean Garcia and daughter Jennica Garcia will star in Ina, Kasusuklaman Ba Kita?. Dennis Trillo and Jennylyn Mercado will star in the remake of Gumapang Ka Sa Lusak which will air by the first week of February.

Brazil wins Miss Earth 2009

Brazil seems to be the beauty powerhouse of the Miss Earth 2009 pageant with this year's competition concluded with the victory of Miss Brazil Larissa Ramos.

On its ninth year, the pageant's organizers decided to give Brazil the crown though she didn't give the best answer during the final interview.

The eight finalists were asked to interpret photos which show perennial problems faced by nature --- such as drought, air and water pollution, etc.

The mega favorite Miss Philippines Sandra Seifert ended as Miss Air or first runner up, even though she gave the best answer among the finalists. It seems that the Filipino organizers gave in to pressures from clamoring fans that Philippines shouldn't get a back to back win this year to protect the pageant's reputation.

Personal favorite Miss Spain Alejandra Echevarria won as Miss Fire or 3rd Runner Up while high favorite Venezuela's Jessica Barbosa was named Miss Water or 2nd Runner Up. If you could observe, Spain is the only country in the final four who didn't have a past winner. Philippines, Brazil and Venezuela already got one crown each, with Brazil now already won its second victory.

It is important to note that favorites like Cuba's Jamillette Gaxiola, Natalia Quinonez from Mexico, Miss USA Amy Diaz and Luna Isabella Voce from Italy failed to advance to the semifinals.

Know Your Pilot: ABS-CBN 2010 shows

ABS-CBN finally unveiled its line-up for the first quarter of 2010. The network, starting last year, opted not to launch new shows on December. Instead the network will air on primetime rerun of Boys Over Flowers to fill in the void which will be left by the near ending Lovers in Paris.

The Kapamilya network will kick off the new year with the Teleserye Queen and Young Superstar Judy Ann Santos in the lead role. Judai will star opposite Derek Ramsay in the medical teleserye Habang May Buhay.

The series was long overdue because of several revisions on the story and the changing of directors three times. Also in the show are Will Devaughn, Joem Bascon, Gladys Reyes, Gina Alajar, Rio Locsin, Tetchie Agbayani, John Arcilla, and Makisig Morales.

Next is Angelica Panganiban launched as the new teleserye princess with Rubi. The Philippine remake of the hit Mexican drama where the main antagonist is the protagonist in the series. This will be a drama of love and betrayal which also star Diether Ocampo, Jake Cuenca, and Shaina Magdayao.

Other cast members include Cherry Pie Picache, Cherie Gil, Coney Reyes, Bing Loyzaga, Gardo Versoza, Allan Paule, Juan Rodrigo, Dante Rivero, Kaye Abad, Megan Young, Xian Lim, John James Uy, Wowie de Guzman, Susan Africa, Eva Darren and Rey “PJ” Abellana.

Kimerald fans will surely go gaga with the new teleserye Kung Tayo'y Magkakalayo to be starred by the phenomenal loveteam Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson as they will showcase their dramatic prowess.

The casting is surely a stellar one with Kris Aquino together with son Baby James Aquino-Yap as part of the list. Making the cast more controversial is the addition of Gabby Concepcion, Albert Martinez, Coco Martin, Maricar Reyes, Jaclyn Jose, and Maxene Eigenmann.

Another must-see teleserye is Tanging Yaman featuring Melissa Ricks, Erich Gonzales, Matt Evans, Enchong Dee, and Ejay Falcon. The new drama is from the makers of the hit and phenomenal drama Tayong Dalawa. With a story that is very timely with its social commentary, Tanging Yaman will surely set primetime on fire. Also in the casts are Agot Isidro, Mylene Dizon, Jodi Sta. Maria, Rowell Santiago, Leo Martinez, and Ron Morales.

The children's favorite alien Kokey is also set to return this 2010 with no less than Emmy nominee Angel Locsin being part of the show with comedian Vhong Navarro, Nova Villa, and Gloria Romero.

This news is somewhat unexpected since many are already expecting Angel to kick off the year with her new teleserye with John Lloyd Cruz.

Roxanne Guinoo is also set for a major TV comeback in Magkano Ang Iyong Dangal (previously reported as Mahal Na Mahal Kita) opposite Sid Lucero and Rayver Cruz. Other cast members include Ina Raymundo, Will Devaughn, Tetchie Agbayani, and Rio Locsin.

Precious Hearts Romances continues to revive love stories including Cheating Heart which will reunite Cristine Reyes and Jake Cuenca and Midnight Phantom starring Rafael Rosell and Denise Laurel. Impostor pairs Maja Salvador with her once rumored suitor Sam Milby.

The favorite teen barkada from the 90s will be back via Gimik 2010. This time, Judy Ann Santos, Diether Ocampo, G Toengi, Mylene Dizon, and Bojo Molina portray young couples who already have their own families. New Star Magic artists will be joining this show as well

Audiences should also watch Luis Manzano and Billy Crawford team up for Pilipinas Got Talent and the third installment of Agimat: The Ramon Revilla Collection starring Coco Martin as Tonyong Bayawak.

Who will win Miss Earth 2009?

The excitement is getting more intense as the delayed telecast of the 2009 Miss Earth pageant is just minutes away on ABS-CBN.

Miss Philippines Sandra Seifert is heating up the competition with the aim of bringing the crown to the country from another Miss Philippines, the outgoing Miss Earth 2008 Karla Henry.

Sandra Seifert already won two major awards, the Best in Swimsuit and the Best in Evening Gown. Many are questioning this win, speculating favoritism towards the host country. Philippines is also the home country of the Miss Earth pageant, with Filipino company Carousel Productions as the pageant owner and organizer.

With these two awards, Philippines is already secured with a slot in the semi-finals or in the Top 18. But the girls who will enter the semi-finals will have equal footing towards the crown as they will start the competition anew --- meaning, the major awards they have already won will have no bearing in the finals night.

This year's batch boasts the most stunning and most beautiful girls ever in the Miss Earth history.

So who do you think will be the new spokesperson for Mother Earth?

Is sh the hometown girl Sandra Siefert? Or will the overrated Miss Cuba Jamillette Gaxiola meet the high expectations on her? Will Miss Venezuela Jessica Barboza bring the second major international crown to her country after the Miss Universe 2009? Or my favorite Alejandra Echevarria of Spain will snatch the crown?

Stay tune on ABS-CBN and witness another spectacular which features more than 80 international beauties vying for crown to be the new face and voice of Mother Earth.

A three-year-old child is gaining popularity in Zamboanga del Norte when the parents named the baby after television network ABS-CBN.

The report did not disclose ABS-CBN Macawili’s gender. Macawili was born on November 9, 2006 and is from Barangay Baybay, Liloy.

Weng Espiritu reported that Macawili’s parents named the baby after the Kapamilya network.

When Jerry Macawili’s wife was pregnant, they decided to choose from four popular names for their baby.

ABS-CBN’s mother, Soledad, said her husband dreamt of naming her baby after the network. “Napanaginipan ng asawa ko na ipapangalan sa bata ABS-CBN, dahil ito raw ang gusto ng bata.

'Kokey' returns to primetime this 2010

ABS-CBN gave a sneak peek on its upcoming shows for 2010 in a trade fair of the network held during the 21st Philippine Advertising Congress in Subic.

The network introduced to its valued advertisers the new shows it has been cooking up for the coming year which is expected to be very important since it's the election season. It is expected that airtime revenues will increase as political aspirants campaign to get more votes, of course TV is the biggest player on this field.

One of the shows introduced is Kokey@Ako. The fantaserye will be the second incarnation of the the weird-looking alien who is very popular among kids.

The mascot of Kokey and an unnamed alien character joined with the stars of the show was introduced in the trade event.

The other alien character which is pink in color is very cute. I even liked it better than Kokey.

I thin, Kokey@Ako is ABS-CBN's kiddie programming immediately after TV Patrol World replacing the top rating May Bukas Pa which is expected to end by January of 2010.

It may not be as expensive and as luxurious as the crown worn by the Miss Universe, but the Miss Earth crown is regal and elegant. Marian Rivera faces new controversy

It seems that negative reports of Marian Rivera having a bad attitude are undying. After several snubbing incidents reported by several showbiz columnists and writers, here go again a buzz where Marian reportedly pushed a young girl who wanted to have her autograph.

This would be difficult for the actress since no matter how popular you are, if the victim is a child, then naturally the public will sympathized with the young girl.

“It’s impossible for her to do that. Wala talagang puwedeng paraan para mangyari yun. I think they have to get their facts straight from people before lumalabas na ganyan-ganyan, because hindi lang yung morale ng tao ang dina-down nila kung hindi pati yung paniniwala ng bata na ginawa talaga sa kanya yun." Dingdong said to defend his rumored girlfriend.

“Well, sa pagkakakilala ko sa kanya all these years, hindi niya magagawa yung bagay na yun dahil si Marian ang isang tao na sobrang mahal niya ang bata, lalung-lalo na ang mga batang humahanga sa kanya.” he further said.

Marian should fix this issue before it could grow into a full scale showbiz controversy where the aforementioned girl be interviewed in showbiz talk shows. This could definitely put Marian in bad light.

Do you believe that Marian really pushed a young girl?
