Richard Gutierrez, Cristine Reyes make it to NY Times

It seems that the story of Kapuso top leading man Richard Gutierrez saving Kapamilya actress Cristine Reyes hit it big in the US.

It has been the headline in US cable news networks CNN and Fox News. But the biggest impact is, the story has also reached the respected and renowned New York Times.

The fairy tale-like story of a handsome actor saving another actress in distress was reported in New York's top broadsheet entitled “Filipino Actor Saves Real-Life Damsel in Distress”.

You can read the story here.

But the conscious effort of Richard to save Cristine still received snub from others who find his act of heroism as a way of gimmicry as the two will star in an upcoming horror thriller.

Gimmick or not...Richard saving Cristine still looks like a romantic scene one could only see on movies!

'Lovers in Paris' improves, 'TV Patrol' still no. 1 - National TNS (September 29, 2009)

On this time of calamity, people are paying more attention on the news than dramas on TV.

ABS-CBN's flagship newscast TV Patrol World scored another no. 1 in the national ratings courtesy of its 34.5%, 2 points ahead of second placer May Bukas Pa still from ABS-CBN which received 32.5%.

After its lackluster pilot, Lovers in Paris skyrocketed to the third place via its 30.6%. It edged out the early primetime drama Katorse which is good in the fourth place.

GMA's no. 1 show is fifth. Darna, now below the 30% mark is good enough to grab the 5th spot from Dahil May Isang Ikaw.

Ruffa Gutierrez on issue with Liz Uy: No Comment

ABS-CBN TV host and former beauty queen Ruffa Gutierrez refused to give comment on the latest issue between her and stylist Liz Uy.

Liz Uy is the fashion editor ex-girlfriend of actor John Lloyd Cruz who is now being romantically linked to Ruffa Gutierrez.

The issue refers to an interview of Liz Uy with a broadsheet. She was asked who are the celebrities she has dressed, Liz didn't include Ruffa.

The same day that the issue erupted, Ruffa was rumored to have flown to the US where John Lloys is currently promoting the international screenings of his latest film In My Life.

“Hindi totoo ‘yan! Wala. I’m here. At wala akong planong umalis for now or for next month. Baka sa New Year.” Ruffa clarified in an interview with ABS-CBN.com

Gina Pareño denies transfer to GMA

The popular Lola Gets of the newly concluded primetime series Tayong Dalawa has denied the rumors that she will jump to ABS-CBN's rival network.

The rumor started when ABS-CBN Business Unit Head Deo Endrinal joked during the thanksgiving party of Tayong Dalawa that Gina Pareño had "secret meetings" with the executives of GMA Network.

But Gina is already slated to be part of another project under Endrinal.

“Eh siyempre kinakausap ako. Tsaka darling sa edad kong ito wala na akong contract contract. Pero siyempre I love working sa ABS-CBN. Definitely solidong kapamilya ako talaga. Hindi ako aalis,” she said in an exclusive interview with ABS-CBN.com.

So Lola Gets will be back on ABS-CBN's primetime block after all.

ABS-CBN's daytime wins, GMA slumps

It seems that with Mega Manila devastated by typhoon Ondoy and people there got no time for TV, GMA's daytime block slumped to its lowest figures since the national ratings measurement started.

GMA's drama block following Eat Bulaga got very low figures with Daisy Siete down to a single digit ratings.

ABS-CBN's core audience is in the provinces especially on Visayas and Mindanao are not affected by the typhoon, that's why the kapamilya network seems unaffected.

Here's the national daytime ratings last Monday, September 28, 2009 from TNS:

Ruffa & Ai (7.7%) vs. SIS (6.3%)

Pilipinas, Game K N B? (12.5%) vs. Last Romance (11.3%)

Wowowee (24%) vs. Eat Bulaga (15.2%), Daisy Siete (9.4%)

Banana Split: Daily Servings (19.1%) vs Kaya Kong Abutin Ang Langit (11.5%)

Kambal Sa Uma (20.3%) vs. Tinik sa Dibdib (11.4%)

'Lovers in Paris' soft premiere - National TNS (September 25, 2009)

After all the hype, publicity and promotion, the new series Lovers in Paris premiered with 27.4%, only good for the fourth slot.

The KC Concepcion-Piolo Pascual starrer failed to live up to its high expectations. Well I don't wonder why. You can read it here.

TV Patrol World regained the top spot as people are glued in the news for updates on typhoon Ondoy.

Even Katorse edged out Lovers in Paris as the Erich Gonzales starrer registered 30.3%.

That is not just the bad news for ABS-CBN.

Lovers in Paris premiered in Mega Manila on the ninth spot as it recorded a very low 17.6%, partly because many areas in the capital are still out of electricity.

But GMA shows still performed strongly, though most of the figures are lower than last week.

The teleserye topbilled by Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson with Jake Cuenca and Coco Martin easliy snagged the top spot while May Bukas Pa is a distant second with 39.3%.

The high ratings show how well loved Tayong Dalawa is by the people.

With this super high ratings, ABS-CBN recently announced that it is planning a new primetime teleserye for Kim and Gerald, this time with Kris Aquino. Kris is definitely returning to making soap since she badly needs money for the upcoming elections.

Gerald Anderson photos in the middle of the flood

During the onslaught of typhoon Ondoy, pictures of young actor Gerald Anderson surfaced on the net where he was seen swimming in the muddy flood waters as he tried to help stranded neighbors. I supposed the other guy is Gerald's brother.

Risking your own life to rescue your neighbors is not a simple feat. Gerald showed he is not just a pretty boy on TV, but a good samaritan as well who is ready to extend a helping hand to the needy.

Starmometer's Most Beautiful Pinays of 2009

The votes are in. And the verdict is finally out.

For the past four years, Starmometer.com has been holding its annual poll of the Most Beautiful Pinay.

And the results are not that surprising.

Occupying the top 5 are primetime leading ladies, four from ABS-CBN and one from GMA.

No. 5 is the mega daughter and Lovers in Paris star KC Concepcion. Her first primetime teleserye just piloted last night and the ratings are not yet released, so her fans are still crossing their fingers.

On the 4th spot is ABS-CBN's teleserye princess Kim Chiu. She is still fresh from the success of the newly concluded Tayong Dalawa. The teen star joined the first PBB Teen Edition and conquered primetime via hit series Sana Maulit Muli and the first Philippine remake of a Korean series My Girl.

Last years no. 2 is this year's 3rd most beautiful. GMA's Primetime Queen Marian Rivera is still unstoppable with her new hit drama remake Darna. Her GMA primetime show is still the most watched broadcast in Mega Manila, and no. 6 in the national ratings being the top rater among kapuso shows.

Switching with Marian Rivera is the Box Office and singing superstar Queen Sarah Geronimo. She may not be very visible on TV since she just performs every Sunday on ASAP, but her films are top grossers, with the latest being the highest grossing Filipino film of all time. With her common Pinay looks, Sarah secured the second spot this year.

And still no. 1 is former GMA Primetime Queen and now TV superstar Angel Locsin. Her last primetime show Only You with Sam Milby conquered the national ratings, beating May Bukas Pa on several instances. Angel is now preparing to shoot her movie with Aga Muhlach under Star Cinema.

Closing the top 10 are Kristine Hermosa on the 6th spot, Maja Salvador is 7th, Cristine Reyes is 8th, 9th is Anne Curtis and 10th is Erich Gonzales.

Housemate Trishia Santos is nominated for the 5th time

After Kuya changed the nomination process, I thought the pretty housemate Trishia Santos will be spared with being nominated for eviction but I was wrong.

The misunderstood housemate got 11 points from the Teenternational housemates except from the cute Aussie housemate James Reid who got a crush on her.

James and Trishia could be a cute couple for TV and ABS-CBN should bank on the two already. James should learn Tagalog quickly!

Now back to the topic, this is already the fifth time Trishia was nominated but I'm sure she'll be saved again since the pretty lass for Davao is always topping the votes to save --- garnering a whooping 43% on the last poll to think there are five nominees.

Joe Vargas is nominated. Hopefully he'll be booted out since he's already getting annoying. Patrick Sugui and Angelo Pasco are the other nominees from the Pinoy housemates.

As for the teenternational housemates, nominated for the first time are James Reid,Jenny Kim and Jack Yoon while it's a 2nd time for Sophia Ko.

TV Review: Lovers in Paris

The highly anticipated remake of the Korean series Lovers in Paris finally aired last night on ABS-CBN.

Topbilled by KC Concepcion and Piolo Pascual, the show gambled to a new pairing.

ABS-CBN has this unofficial tradition that newbie actresses on the network will be paired with its no. 1 leading man Piolo Pascual.

Watching the premiere episode last night is a great dissapointment since it replaced a highly acclaimed Tayong Dalawa on the timeslot.

The pilot is fast paced. The establishment of KC's character Vivian's backstory is brief and quick. That part, I would commend the director and the writers, because it's really dragging the pilot. I think, this was done by the director to avoid the viewers get bored and eventually switch channels.

The series attempted to show KC's comic side. Since the character demands KC to be funny, the episode centered on Vivian's escapades on Paris, being a working student.

KC tends to be slpastick. I don't find her supposedly-funny scenes funny at all. It was as if it's a pain in the ass watching her looking dumb, especially in the restaurant where she first met Piolo Pascual.

Piolo Pascual plays Carlo, a rich Filipino businessman in Paris. The actor showed his efficiency as the role demands for him to speak in French. And Piolo looked fluent with last night's episode. He's acting is good. I mean, the character requires him to be snubbish and stiff, the sharp opposite of Vivian.

KC's attempt to be funny is of no-avail. Maybe it would be better that ABS-CBN cast her on dramatic roles. I also find her way of talking a turn off.

The pilot episode isn't the type that would convince viewers to stick to it up to the end. It's plainly boring. The series is just a glorified remake since it was shot in Paris, but nothing exceptional so far.

I expect K Brosas being KC's friend in Paris to inject much humor but also fell short.

The pilot episode may rate not that high since many areas are still out of electricity due to typhoon Ondoy.

I personally hope that the chemistry between Piolo and KC will pick up in the coming episodes. But chemistry can never be learned. Chemistry is something that comes naturally, just like with Jericho Rosales and Kristine Hermosa.

Pinoy celebs help victims of typhoon Ondoy

Hollywood celebrities has been showing sympathy to the thousands of victims of typhoon Ondoy in the Philippines who were left homeless, with nothing from food, drinking water and clothes.

Celebreties like Demi Moore, Josh Groban, Demi Lovato, Joel madden and Benji Madden of Good Charlotte, Pete Wentz, author Paulo Coehlo, Alyssa Milano, Channing Tatum, and Paris Hilton all tweeted and posted on their Facebook account the call for help to the devastated families in the Philippines.

But many local celebrities also did the initiative of sharing and helping the needy, the displaced families on flooded areas in Metro Manila and surrounding communities.

Angel Locsin, after hearing the tragic fate of many Filipinos who were ravaged by flood waters, immediately donated Php 500,000 to ABS-CBN's Sagip Kapamilya.

Aside from the money donation, Angel also lead the delivery of relief goods to familes who were in dire need of food, clean clothes and drinking water. The actress also urged her friends to donate to various civic organizations and take part on her own relief operation.

Fulfilling her duty as an ambassador of UN, KC Concepcion went on with her friends to two flooded areas to rescue stranded families and deliver necessities to various victims.

Angel, KC together with Piolo Pascual went to Payatas, Quezon City also to extend help to flood victims.

Media titan Kris Aquino has been actively vouching donations from her many endorsements, pulling the donations and cash pledges on ABS-CBN Foundation to soaring heights. Willie Revillame also donated a whooping Php 1 million to ABS-CBN's Sagip Kapamilya.

Marian Rivera also donated Php 100,000 to GMA Kapuso Foundation. The Kapuso network, like ABS-CBN, has also utilized its stars in asking for pledges and donations for its relief operations via its foundation spearheaded by anchor Mel Tiangco.

Meanwhile, Judy Ann Santos and husband Ryan Agoncillo rushed to Rizal to rescue Gladys Reyes and her kids as the flood waters already reached the second level of their home.

After rescuing Gladys, the couple returned to Rizal with food and drinking water for Gladys' neighbors.

Celebrities have shown that in times of devastation, they are not all glitz and glam but are part of the community helping each other to rise from muds brought by the raging typhoon.

Filipina causes outrage with insensitive remarks

In this time of turmoil, after the tragic effects of typhoon Ondoy, it is expected that Filipinos will hand in hand face the remnants of the typhoon, regain our composure and rise from this debacle.

Many families lost their homes, worse their loved ones. The helpless victims were trapped on their rooftops looming with concern over the rising flood waters. Children and the old ones were left unable to struggle as they were swept with the rushing currents of the overflowing river.

The nation's capital was transformed overnight into a waterworld, of chocolate brown flood waters, a world strucked with thousands crying for help, fighting to survive.

The call for help amongst the victims roared in national television, with ABS-CBN and GMA held hotlines vouching for donations and pledges for the flood victims.

And yet, when in this time that our unity is in deeply needed, a Filipina bragging to have been working abroad posted on Facebook some insensitive remarks causing outrage from Filipinos online.

When several Hollywood celebrities are tweeting to ask for help for the typhoon victims in the Philippines, here came a Filipina blaming the disaster to her countrymen as we quote that the victims deserved what happened being sinners.

The status is truly un-called for. At this time, what we need is to stand together for our country to rise from muds left by the floods and rebuild the communities to face a brighter tomorrow

'Yaya and Angelina: The Spoiled Brat Movie' rakes in Php6 million on first day

The comedy film Yaya and Angelina: The Spoiled Brat Movie reportedly earned Php6 million on its opening as what was happily released by its producers, GMA Films and APT Entertainment .

And according to Starmometer, when they say Php6 million, it’s their way of saying “walang padding.”

Oh common, it's really a tirade to Star Cinema. It's an indirect way of saying that the huge box-office grosses being reported by Star Cinema are padded. Sounds being bitter.

Php6 million as an opening gross doesn't shout a hit. It's just a so-so figure for a film which was already heavily promoted on GMA. But why say it's not padded. Does this indirectly accuses Star Cinema films to be padded.

Well I'm sorry for these producers. Since if you would compare the number of people entering the cinemas in In My Life against those in Yaya and Angelina, you could already analyze that the Star Cinema movie will grossed higher.

Besides, Star Cinema movies are heavily promoted on ABS-CBN. ABS-CBN is the leading network in the provinces and cities outside Mega Manila. The box-office gross is not just tabulated from cinemas in Mega Manila, but all the theaters nationwide.

'In My Life' hauls Php80 million on its first week

The Vilma Santos comeback movie opened at Php20 million and grossed an impressive Php80 million on its first week, according to report.
The movie was poised to break the Php200 million mark since its opening day gross is higher than summer's monster hit You Changed My Life which opened with Php18 million. The movie top billed by Sarah Geronimo and John Lloyd Cruz eventually became the first Filipino film to surpass the Php200 million mark.

Ang Tanging Ina N'yong Lahat surpassed the Php100 million mark only on its first week but grossed Php197 million on its entire run.

So In My Life still has the chance to break the Php200 million mark if people who got to watch the film will encourage people to go to cinemas and experience this one in a lifetime story. (Oh...I'm already encouraging!)

By the way, anyone heard the box-office gross of Marian Rivera's Tarot? I just want to know how strong is the appeal on the box-office of GMA's Primetime Queen.

In My Life: A Story of our Lives

I cried. I laughed. I giggled. I swayed. I teared and bled. Oh that's already hyperbole.

I never had watched a Filipino movie so packed with emotions that I got confused if I would continue crying or blab with laughter.

'In My Life' is definitely the movie of the year.

The hilarious Vilma Santos as the stiff school librarian opened the movie. You can't help but enjoy her being a very strict librarian with overly funny antics like ahmmmm...scolding students flirting in the lib. The scene reminded me of some high school memories...of course not the flirting, its the strict librarian. LOL

Then when she decided to fly to New York where her gay son is residing, John Lloyd came to fetch her with a limo he is driving (he's a driver in NY). I enjoyed the initial conflict between the mom and the son's boyfriend.

The following scenes showed JL and Luis touring Vilma in the Big Apple. Vilma's character had several personal issues being a soltera de separada, and her children leaving her as they embark their personal journeys with their own families. Now, New York is really huge. They went to Central Park to Liberty Island where the Statue of Liberty stands.

There are also several sweet moments with John Lloyd and Luis. If both are gays in real life, they could have been a very cute couple. I got jelly that part since I'm currently mending my broken heart..Arggggg!!!

The conflict entered with Luis diagnosed with stage one of colon cancer and refused to tell her mom. John Lloyd, being a supportive lover abides with Luis in keeping the latter's sickness from Vilma.

Obviously when Vilma discovered the truth, she got mad with JL. The emotions there are so intense that I started crying sympathizing with John Lloyd. The reaction he showed is genuinely gay. I lOoooove it.

I can relate with the scene where John Lloyd got jealous with Luis's ex-boyfriend. The ex-boyfriend is a hunky American guy...so handsome that I can't stop but drool over him.

Luis underwent surgery and was declared healed.

I love the picnic scene where Luis told her mom that he doesn't want to be a disappointment again since he is already a very BIG disappointment himself (well..he's gay).

But after thinking that everything is already okay, Luis was hit by a truck and died.

In his wake, the confrontation between Vilma and John Lloyd directly hit my heart. Bulls eye!

I cried with them. I felt the pain. The genuine emotions are there. Vilma's intense acting paired with John Lloyd's seamless performance delivered the film's creative height. Vilma slapped JL and JL slapped her back.

Oh in that scene, I was literally on tears. I was really struggling not to cry hard because there are several strangers at the back of my seat. Even my two gay friends are also on tears. They were literally blown away by the superb acting.

I would really placed on my itinerary to watch Filipino films from time to time.

I think the reason why I could relate with the film is not because I'm gay. This is not the typical gay film you would watch that centers with the intimate relationship of two gay guys and the conflicts faced by same sex relationships in society.

The film dwells with a mother who claims to have known much about life but ends up learning the most valuable lesson from her son's lover. It's a story for the whole family, a story which could open our eyes.

JL delivered the most memorable line there. He said that being the mother, the one who has conceived and cared her child, doesn't give her the right to own the child. A child will grow up into the person he is because of the people who came to his/her life, the mother only being one of those people.

'In My Life' is not only the story of gay people. It is but a story of everyone who have loved and loved in return.
