AGB seals Marian Rivera as Primetime Queen, TNS tells otherwise

The newest fantaserye of GMA Network proved to be a hit as Darna topped the NUTAM ratings chart for its premiere week as reported by AGB Nielsen.

AGB reported via PEP that Darna registered an impressive 35.6% nationwide, capturing the top spot for itself and with an audience share of 47.3%.

This is not the first time for a GMA show to top the NUTAM. Marimar and Dyesebel, both starring Marian Rivera became no. 1 in the nationwide survey conducted by AGB Nielsen. Marian now has three shows on her belt making waves nationwide.

But a competing ratings provider TNS Media Intelligence opposed the results of AGB.

In the national suvey of TNS, Darna only emerged second to ABS-CBN's primetime newscast TV Patrol World during its premiere week. TV Patrol World garnered 35.5% while Darna received 35.4%.

It also bested other kapamilya shows May Bukas Pa, Tayong Dalawa and Only You.

But the Marian Rivera starrer dipped to the fourth slot on its second week as the Kapamilya primetime trio retaliated with the finale of Only You. Only You emerged as the second primetime series of 2009 to reach the 40% mark. May Bukas Pa remains the first and the highest rated show for 2009 which broke the 40% mark several times.

Movie Review: District 9

By Romeo Vasquez Jr.

A low budget. A newbie director. An unknown cast. Plus a peculiar movie format. Sum all that and you, apparently, earn for yourself a hell-shit movie. All in two words, call it, District 9.

Awe-struck. That's how I described myself after watching the movie. And mind you, the rubbishes of Transformers (Revenge of the Fallen) and GI Joe must be appalled with great shame for what they failed to become and what was achieved by District 9.

The movie was, both at the same time, a story with a blasting humor and a heart and a soul. It creates a stumbling twist about alien invasion and excellently puts up an enlightening perspective about how we see aliens. After all, it makes one think, are aliens really that all-evil and that all-monstrous?

Oh well. Right after having witnessed the film, for the rarest of times, I have been downright sympathetic with the alien race and have been downright loathing against the human race.

The mock-documentary movie format of District 9 worked much better that I thought it will. The last time I was impressed with movies of such type was that of Cloverfield (which I still think is the best of its kind). This not-so-popular movie theme was truly revealing. Not to mention how the movie-slash-documentary ended painstakingly breath-taking. Not of the effects or what, but of how it pricked the heart.

How the movie was very entertaining is out of the question. (And I swear how I'm still smiling after remembering the details.) How aliens also hire Nigerian prostitutes. (for Eva Fonda's sake! haha) How they loved catfood. (gross) How they rioted with the human race. How they would surrender to the police after pee-ing in the streets. All that human thingies that you wouldn't thought aliens could be. Oh boy. I never have imagined me calling these aliens cute, while giggling feverishly. haha, silly.

And for the love of Saw series, Hostel and all those manual-bloody-eyeballs-popping-out-of-its-sockets flicks, District 9 is entertainingly gross. It's bloody and violent but it's not the type that will get you vomiting outside the cinemas.

All these positive remarks are now becoming boring but, hell, there's more. The visual and special effects, the scoring... it made the watching a bloody good time!

Gees. Let's put it this way. I loved the film because one, it gets you thinking and not just investing on brain-insulting effects. Two, it's not the usual And-I-Love-You-So-yuckies or the typical GI-Joes-commoners you see in cinemas but it's the type that will get you haunted for the next decade to come. And three, I love seafoods and they're calling the aliens prawns. Yummy.

To Blompkamp (director), just in case he browses over (LOL), I am becoming a fan.

District 9 is the best film I saw this year, since Star Trek. Yup. It's the film to beat!

Time for dinner. Mixed seafoods, everyone! (or would you want catfood?)

'Power, Privilege and Justice' host Dominick Dunne dies of cancer

Hollywood lost another important pillar of its long standing family.

Author Dominick Dunne, who told stories of shocking crimes among the rich and famous through his magazine articles and weekly program on Court TV, "Power, Privilege and Justice." died Wednesday at his home in Manhattan. He was 83.

He is the author of popular novels "People Like Us" and "The Two Mrs. Grenvilles" which were both turned into miniseries.

Actor-director Griffin Dunne said in a statement released by Vanity Fair that his father had been battling bladder cancer for some time. But the cancer did not prevent Dunne from working and socializing, his twin passions.

In September 2008, against the orders of his doctor and the wishes of his family, he flew to Las Vegas to attend the kidnap-robbery trial of O.J. Simpson, a postscript to his coverage of Simpson's 1995 murder trial that spiked Dunne's considerable fame.

In the past year, Dunne had traveled to Germany and The Dominican Republic for experimental stem cell treatments to fight his cancer. At one point, he wrote that he and Farrah Fawcett were in the same cancer clinic in Bavaria but did not see each other.

Chris Brown sentenced to 5-year probation, community labor

R'nB star Chris Brown received his sentence in the assault case filed against him by former girlfriend and R'nB princess Rihanna.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Patricia Schnegg on Tuesday sentenced Brown of five years' probation and six months' community labor for the beating of Rihanna and ordered the R&B singer to stay away from his former girlfriend for the next five years.

The judge also told Brown that he may go to a federal prison if he violated one of the provisions stated above except if he and Rihanna attend music industry events.

Brown will serve his sentence in his home state — Virginia — and his community labor will be overseen by the police chief in Richmond.

The judge said she wanted to ensure that Brown, 20, performs physical labor instead of community service, such as mentoring young people. He will also undergo a year of domestic violence counseling.

Michael Jackson died from lethal levels of anesthetic

The question to King of Pop's untimely death is finally answered.

The mystery to Michael Jackson's death landed on the hands of his personal doctor.

LA Times reported that the LA County coroner's office found Lethal levels of the anesthetic propofol in Jackson's body.

According to the affidavit submitted by Dr. Conrad Murray, he had treated Jackson for a severe insomnia for six weeks, during which Murray claims he was trying to wean Jackson from his addiction to propofol and withheld the drug, using different medications instead.

On the day Michael died, Murray already tried a number of medications throughout the morning until finally at 10:40 am, he administered propofol to Jackson's body on the pop icon's insistence.

After Murray left to make some phone calls, he returned to find Jackson not breathing. He was declared dead later that day at the UCLA Medical Center.

Aquino Family okay with Ate Vi, Piolo to play Cory & Ninoy in movie

After the death of the beloved matriarch of the Philippines' most loved family, the latest buzz in showbiz is that Star Cinema will be producing a movie about Cory and Ninoy.

Since this buzz will possibly push through, the talk now surrounds to the actors who will portray the country's icon of democracy.

It was confirmed by Kris Aquino, the youngest and most popular among the Aquino siblings, on her talk show The Buzz that ABS-CBN President Charo Santos already talked to her about the plan of Star Cinema of making two separate movies which will tell the amazing story of former Senator Ninoy Aquino and former President Corazon Aquino.

Ms. Charo mentioned that Star Cinema intends to have Vilma Santos to portray Cory. Kris immediately consulted her sisters and they agreed, saying that could not think of other actress to play their mother in the movie.

Kris also revealed that she and her sisters are fans of Piolo Pascual and they unanimously agreed that Piolo is the best choice to portray Ninoy.

TV Review: Dahil May Isang Ikaw

ABS-CBN's newest primetime offering offers one of this year's biggest ensemble of stars.

Dahil May Isang Ikaw is topbilled by grandslam best actress Lorna Tolentino and one of the most acclaimed character actors Gabby Concepcion. This also marked the return of one of the country's most loved tandem Kristine Hermosa and Jericho Rosales.

But the pilot episode was not outstanding as what was expected.

Basically, the pilot establishes the foundation of the show as what was customary to original Filipino soap operas.

It started with young Kristine and Jericho meeting on the streets and slums of Manila living an impoverished life.

But the style of telling a story from the start is boring and very predictable. I just felt I have already seen this the millionth time in many original Filipino serials.

But what's great with this show is that, though just supports to Kristine Hermosa and Jericho Rosales, Lorna Tolentino and Gabby Concepcion were given roles which will give a mark on the viewers. This is the same with the top rater Tayong Dalawa where the supporting casts often outshine the lead stars as most are already veteran and award-winning actors.

I wasn't able to see much of Chin Chin Gutierrez but I am expecting a stellar performance as what she had given as Corazon in another classic teleserye Maging Sino Ka Man.

But I am still optimistic with this soap amidst its average pilot episode as I believe that the plot will get more interesting in due time.

It seems like Kristine Hermosa is not the only one reported to have the attitude problem.

In an article reported in the Manila Bulletin, Marian Rivera is said to have displayed the primmadonna attitude.

According to the article, the primetime star allegedly showed her dissapointment in the taping of Darna when she discovered that the location is muddy.

Marian told a staff member, “Di ba sinabi ko sa inyo na ayaw ko nang maputik?”

So to appease the complaining actress? The staff reportedly carried Marian to a mud-less place.

One time, again during the taping of Darna, Marian reportedly came while giving a striking remark.

“Dumating na ang reyna na walang bulaklak sa tenga” Marian said which stunned those who heard the one-liner.

This is speculated puporting to Rosalinda star Carla Abellana which was long reported to replace Marian as GMA's primetime queen but Rosalinda failed to top the ratings.

Marian also allegedly did not want to share her dressing room to Carla during an event because she wants the room all by herself.

Miss Universe 2009 Fearless Forecast

Three days from now, the new Miss Universe will be crowned in Nassau, Bahamas!

Photo: Miss Mexico Karla Carrillo

This is our first pageant coverage of the Miss Universe. It has been the first time we provided here in SHELU89 various breaking news and information about the pageant, and we are very proud that our pageant coverage is very successful.

Now, as part of our on-going report on the Miss Universe pageant, SHELU89 brings its fealess forecast on the candidates who will be called in for the Top 15.

Here are the countries who we believe have the strong chance of clinching the coveted crown.

1. Russia - Sofia Rudieva
* She's pretty and very sexy. Her swimsuit presentation is outstanding and her evening gown is also quiet impressive. Her smile is very sweet and mesmerizing, and a certified photogenic.

2. Dominican Republic - Ada de la Cruz
* She's a queen in the making. Her cat walk is very professional and she had the Miss World 2007 semi-finals attached to her belt.

3. Australia - Rachael Finch
* A plain beauty but her catwalk is a delight. She had a consistent swimsuit and evening gown presentation. I adore her during the evening gown.

4. France - Chloé Mortaud
* She's a true beauty. Her ancestral mix is great. Beautiful face and a toned sexy body. MUO needs a black queen for the decade and she's a perfect choice.

5. Philippines - Bianca Manalo
* Very beautiful. She's refreshing face in the midst of a pageant dominated by Latinas and Caucasians. She nailed the swimsuit preliminary but her evening gown presentation is just so-so. I have this feeling I had on 1999 so Bianca should do her best.

6. Netherlands - Avalon-Chanel Weyzig
* I am not really a fan of her body and I'm not impressed by her swimsuit presentation. But her evening gown is great. I love her sensual smile which can be attributed to her Dutch-Indonesian descent.

7. South Africa - Tatum Keshwar
* Not really outstanding in terms of beauty but her performances are consistent. Her wardrobes are outanding. She even looks like Filipino celebrity Bebe Gandanghari. She is very sexy though.

8. USA - Kristen Dalton
* She can be in the Top 15 because she's Miss USA. I'm not really rooting for her but she's a polished beauty queen. She's every inch a regal queen.

9. Mexico - Karla Carrillo
* She's stunning and gorgeous. She's very tall and queenly. Her swimsuit presentation is breathless. But her evening gown is somewhat like a dip though she was able to pull the performance amidst the fugly gown she wore.

10.Puerto Rico - Mayra Matos
* She will be in the Top 15 because of the sash factor but her stage presence and tone sexy body will be her key to the finals. Her performances, though not that striking, its consistent.

11.Indonesia - Zivanna Letisha Siregar
* Very beautiful. Her swimsuit and evening gown are also good. She's a fresh take among the candidates like Miss Philippines. She's young and vibrant as opposed to most Latina and European candidates.

12.Venezuela - Stefanía Fernández
* She is very beautiful and very sexy. But she has the slimmest chance of winning since its common in the Miss Universe that countries who won the previous year will not win but she is definitely in the Top 15.

13.Vietnam - Võ Hoàng Yến
* Her catwalk killed the other candidates during the evening gown. She is not outstandingly beautiful but her fierceness is very visible. Her greatest asset is her catwalk and long legs. She is even way better than Vietnam's 2008 representative.

13.Kosovo, Marigona Dragusha
* The body is well-toned. Her swimsuit and evening gown presentation is very good. She's a supermodel with the beauty queen charm. She is performing consistently. According to a pageant expert, she looks like Audrey Hepburn. If she will perform great in the finals, she might eventually grab the crown.

14.Spain - Estíbaliz Pereira
* A true beauty. Her body is very sexy and it indeed pulled her swimsuit presentation. Her evening gown presentation is quiet lame. I definitely love her smile. She's also way better than Spain's candidate last year.

15. Bahamas - Kiara Sherman
* The host country deserves its first semi-finalist this year. She has the grace during the evening gown presentation and her catwalk is also good. The stage presence is there and love to see her in the semi-finals.

I want to include favorites like Czech Republic, Iceland and Hungary but I just feel that my list should not be filled with too much blonde.

Is Enchong Dee gay?

He's young and handome. He's hot and sexy! But is he gay?

This is the big question.

There is a blind item which recently published speculating that a newbie young actor is gay. The said young actor will be part of a new teleserye which will be topbilled by a young dramatic actress.

Well, its quiet obvious that the said serye is Katorse.

The blind item also stated that there will be three gorgeous young actors as leading men of the dramatic actress who is identified by our experts as Erich Gonzales.

But who is that young actor being rumored as gay?

Well, as reported by the entertainment blog Byxbuzz, Enchong Dee is the one being referred to as the gay newbie actor.

Such rumors identifying handsome actors as gay is nothing new in Philippine showbiz.

But the evidences presented by Byxbuzz are startling. The blog identified a certain Van Mike Burgos as Enchong's lover, with photos and several screencaps providing concrete proofs.

The rumored lover is equally hot and good-looking as well. I hope Enchong will answer these issues. But he should answer it in a way that instead of being found guilty by echuserang gossipers, he will getaway with this rumor clean and vindicated.

The photo above is Van Mike Burgos, the rumored lover.

Angelica Panganiban gets fiery as Rubi

Gorgeous and elegant, Angelica Panganiban appeared in the recent ABS-CBN Trade Fair in character, as the bida-kontrabida female fatale Rubi.

Angelica will grace ABS-CBN's Primetime Bida as Rubi, the Mexicanovela remake which will require her to go sexy.

Well, this isn't the first time for Angelica to go sexy. She was established as a mature actress when she was launched in Santa Santita. This is in order to go away from the usual teeny bopper roles being offered to her then.

The Kapamilya actress got the nod as Rubi after her remarkable portrayal of Scarlett Dela Rhea, the socialite nemesis of Claudine Baretto in Iisa Pa Lamang.

Now, Angelica will be part of the growing list of ABS-CBN's Teleserye Princesses as she will embark in the highly competitive primetime block on her first lead role.

Watch out for Angelica Panganiban, Jake Cuenca, Diether Ocampo, and Shaina Magdayao in Rubi coming soon on ABS-CBN.

Roxanne Guinoo explains why she's not visible nowadays!

In an exclusive interview with ABS-CBN.com, young actress Roxanne Guinoo explains why she's not visible nowadays in the showbiz limelight.

Roxanne admitted that offers are coming slow these days after she decided to shed away the sexy image she had in favor of becoming a serious actress. She was once dubbed by Direk Laurenti Dyogi as the next leading lady to watch for.

She was supposed to appear in an episode of Precious Hearts Romances Present Bud Brothers but eventually turned it down because of the many intimate scenes needed and included. But she was quick to dismiss that she is already picky about the projects she'll accept.

Roxanne explained that she is just not the type who would plunge into a new role half-heartedly.

She already appeared as lead star in Sineserye Presents Natutulog ba ang Diyos? and in the daytime drama Ligaw na Bulaklak.

Though she seldom appears now on TV, the kapamilya actress remains firm on her decision.

She is even thankful that her suspense thriller Florinda will be aired next month, this being topbilled by the Diamond Star Maricel Soriano.

In the meantime, Roxanne is going back to school and will take Business Management.

Kristine Hermosa primadonna on set?

The diva strikes back!

Reports are surfacing again about the undying allegations of Kristine Hermosa's attitude problem.

According to several reports, the lead female star of ABS-CBN's newest primetime teleserye Dahil May Isang Ikaw is asking for shortened work hours just like her co-star, the veteran and award-winning actress Lorna Tolentino.

Kristine, also purposedly failed to report on many in-location tapings as she didn't like the said locations. She also didn't report in tapings until her request be granted.

But the ABS-CBN management reportedly turned down the demands of the actress. The network also threatened to sue Kristine if she will continue not reporting to work.

Dahil May Isang Ikaw is the comeback primetime soap of Kristine, reuniting her with Jericho Rosales. The two last paired in Sana'y Wala Nang Wakas six years ago.

After their much publicized relationship and being vocal about their love and affection to one another, primetime star Angel Locsin and TV host Luis Manzano is said to have broken-up.

This, according to a very reliable source reported in Noypitayo.

I'm sad with this news because I really think that Angel and Luis brought the best on each other. But with the news of Angel being single again might fans happy since many are rooting for Sam Milby be paired with Angel not just in reel but in real life as well.

Better that we'll just wait for the details and the update with this rumor.

What if Miss Philippines doesn't make it to the coveted circle?

By genres5 of Missosology.info

What if Miss Philippines will return home a non-winner?

This is a thought that I think isn’t welcome at this time, but I shall take the risk of tackling this question to address one of the posters (obviously not in favor of Filipino fans and Filipina beauties) who foisted the idea that the euphoria shared by Filipino pageant aficionados the world over is going to be short-lived and will die down on the 23rd of August 2009.

(Pardon for pushing this unwelcome thought, but this exercise will also push me to write something that is work-related and at the same time contribute to re-readings of beauty pageant fandom in this side of the world. I believe the forum has been a venue to pursue those goals.)

The answer to the question is pretty obvious. Everybody will be disappointed. For days or even weeks, some of us will probably wallow in despair. Some serious pageant fans will lose their appetite; others will distance themselves from pageant forums for a while. But one thing that I should know is that Filipino fandom will revitalize itself after defeat; it will restore its luster, regain its verve, and become noisy and passionate and yes, annoying once more! Soon it will be like fiesta in forums as we look forward to another pageant season.

I tell you pageant forums are not complete without the noisy—somebody used the term ‘un-educated’ (to me, a very curious, contentious choice)—Filipino fans.

Having no Filipino fans means a lackluster forum. Yes, they may be annoying, irritating even, but one of the pluses of this forum, as far as I’m concerned, is developing the capacity to meander through the noise. That is something you learn from engaging in this forum which you then apply when you engage with people and other elements located in other spaces of the virtual world (cyberspace) or of the more complex bio-physical world.

If there’s any group of pageant fans that has mastered the art of rising from defeat, it would probably be us—the Filipino fandom. Nine consecutive years of defeat in the world’s most prestigious pageant coupled with the usually spiteful ridicule from our equally enthusiastic counterparts the world over have given us lessons to manage very unflattering situations or unfavorable results.

So when the dust finally settles and we come to terms with reality, we recuperate from the debacle, regain our composure, finish our workload, study for our exams, renew friendships, regain our sense of humor, rebuild broken fences, revitalize our quests for our dreams, and yes, write dissertations.

In the end, it is not really the victory of our bets or favorites that matter. It is the pageant fans’ passion that, really, does.

ABS-CBN backs Willie Revillame

ABS-CBN defended beleaguered Wowowee host Willie Revillame in the midst of the growing public outrage against the TV host.

An online signature campaign was even initiated to oust Revillame in his top rating noontime show. This is in reaction to Willie's outburst in national television when he demands the removal of the inset screen showing the funeral cortege of former President Corazon Aquino.

Despite the negative remarks Willie had received from different organizations like the MTRCB there are still sectors who saw nothing untoward about Willie's actions.

ABS-CBN Entertainment Head Cory Vidanes ddressed a letter to Diana Gozum, chairperson of the KBP Standards Authority to defend Willie Revillame.

We obtained a copy of the aforementioned letter:

Dear Ms. Gozum:

We write in reply to your letter dated 10 August 2009, requesting ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation to comment on the complaint of Movie and Television Review & Classification Board (MTRCB) Chairperson Ma. Consoliza P. Laguardia dated 10 August 2009, and an undated statement of Jerry Yap, President of the Alyansa ng Filipino Mamamahayag (AFIMA).

The said complaint and statement both refer to the 03 August 2009 episode of the television program Wowowee, wherein the funeral cortege of the late President Corazon C. Aquino was exhibited as an inset in portions of the said program. The MTRCB letter alleges that Mr. Revillame "appeared to arrogantly demand the removal of the inset screen showing the funeral cortege." The Honorable MTRCB Chairperson then opined that the said act was "desecrating the dead" and, thus, "seems to be in violation of Article 20, Section 2, of the Broadcast Code of the Philippines." On the other hand, the AFIMA statement states that "[f]or him to demand the removal of the little window screen showing the funeral march of the woman who got ABS-CBN back from Marcos is a blasphemy of democracy, an act despicable x x x." It appears, therefore, that the complaint and statement are both based on the alleged disrespect by Mr. Revillame to the late former President Aquino.

It is ABS-CBN's position that there was no disrespect of the dead by Mr. Revillame. When the funeral cortege of former President Aquino was shown as an inset during Wowowee, Mr. Revillame expressed his opinion of the inappropriateness of the simultaneous exhibition of both the funeral cortege and Wowowee, and his preference that only one or the other be shown.

In expressing his opinion and preference, though, Mr. Revillame did not show disrespect for former President Aquino. In fact, the contrary is true. In making his statements, Mr. Revillame wanted to give due respect to former President Aquino and her funeral cortege.

Indeed, in Filipino culture, customs, and tradition, ceremonies involving the dead are solemn and sober. Thus, the laughter, jokes, and happiness usually seen in a program like Wowowee would appear to be inappropriate when viewed together with the funeral cortege. On the one hand, the Filipino people are mourning the death of a loved and respected former President, and on the other hand, Wowowee is trying to entertain its audience.

It appears, therefore, that Mr. Revillame's issue was with the inappropriateness of Wowowee and the funeral cortege being shown together, and not with the funeral cortege itself. While it may be argued that Mr. Revillame could have expressed his thoughts in a better way and that it would have been better to raise them privately, instead of the public manner in which he did, such was not disrespectful of the dead and does not constitute an offense under the KBP Broadcast Code of the Philippines.

We trust the foregoing comment satisfactorily establishes that there was no violation of the KBP Broadcast Code of the Philippines.

Very truly yours,

MA. SOCORRO V. VIDANES
Head, Channel 2
