Ayala to purchase GMA Network?

Conglomerate Ayala Corp. is one of the few Philippine companies that has accumulated extra cash in the past few months, along with Banco de Oro of shopping mall tycoon Henry Sy, San Miguel Corp. and the group of Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co.

The Ayala parent company, boosted by revenues from property projects and units Bank of the Philippine Islands, Manila Water Co. and Globe Telecom Inc., had raised its war chest in the months leading to the auction of the assets of Philippine American Life and General Insurance Co. early this year. The Philam sale did not push through, leaving the Ayala group with billions of cash.

The grapevine said with the Philam assets removed from the auction block, Ayala executives are now setting their sights on listed GMA Network Inc., the second-biggest broadcasting company in the Philippines.

“The acquisition of a major media outfit has long been in the agenda of the Ayala group. GMA Network is a logical choice because of synergies with Globe Telecom,” a source, who is often in touch with senior Ayala officials, told this writer.

The source declined to say which party initiated the move but confirmed that a due diligence on GMA Network’s books was under way.

Officials of the Ayala group and GMA Network are expected to immediately deny this story for reasons that it is too premature or for confidentiality clauses that only the companies are privy to.

ABS-CBN Broadcasting Co. and PLDT earlier dismissed a report on this column that PLDT chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan, or MVP, was looking for “higher stakes” after PLDT bought into Manila Electric Co. MVP is coveting ABS-CBN, but a scion of the Lopez family and PLDT disputed the report. The denial, however, did not stop the rumor.

PLDT’s interest in ABS-CBN also drew violent reactions from president Eugenio “Gabby” Lopez III. When pressed by reporters in March about the rumor, Gabby said he was not interested in getting MVP’s group as a strategic partner in the broadcasting company.

“No, we are not in talks. I’m not interested. What for? What will he [Pangilinan] give me? I don’t want his money,” said Lopez. He added that ABS-CBN and PLDT are competing in some levels because the broadcasting firm offers a cable service while PLDT plans to launch its direct-to-home TV satellite.

MVP, incidentally, took interest in GMA Network of the Gozon-Duavit-Jimenez triumvirate a few years back. PLDT’s Mediaquest Holdings Inc. had planned to purchase 66.67 percent of GMA Network for P8.5 billion. Negotiations fell through after the PLDT unit reduced its valuation of GMA Network to about P12 billion from the initial P14.58 billion.

The PLDT group is already into the media business, controlling 30 percent of business paper BusinessWorld. It wants to purchase 80 percent of the shares held by the family of Quezon City Mayor Feliciano “Sonny” Belmonte Jr.,but the grapevine said negotiations had bogged down after MVP found the paper’s asking price of P4 billion too high.

Drea de Matteo: The Newest Desperate Housewife

Drea de Matteo, known for her role as anti-housewife Adriana La Cerva on The Sopranos, is moving to Wisteria Lane. EW.com's Michael Ausiello reported that de Matteo, who also starred in the Friends spinoff series Joey opposite Matt LeBlanc, will be playing an Italian housewife akin to the rabble-rousing Edie Britt (Nicolette Sheridan). Her character's husband and children have not yet been casted.

This casting choice could not come at a better time for Desperate Housewives, a show that's been getting a little tired despite its initial popularity, ensemble cast and high-stakes drama. de Matteo has the ability to flip her naturally sweet, shy demeanor into a backstabbing, whiny bitch of a character, and this show is the perfect outlet for her ability.

Her gritty, sympathetic portrayal of Adriana La Cerva earned her an Emmy and a Golden Globe nomination in 2004. And despite the short shelf life of Joey, she proved herself as a comedienne, too. She has everything going for her -- and could not be more overqualified to join the cast of Desperate Housewives. Let's hope she kicks things up a few notches.

'Transformers': Worst-reviewed $400 million hit?

After just five days, "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" is halfway to $400 million domestically, a box-office milestone only eight other movies have reached. If it climbs that high, the "Transformers" sequel will be by far the worst-reviewed movie ever to make the $400 million club.

Critics and mainstream crowds often disagree, but "Revenge of the Fallen" sets a new standard for the gulf between what reviewers and mass audiences like.

The movie pulled in $201.2 million since opening Wednesday, the second-best result for a movie in its first five days, just behind "The Dark Knight" with $203.8 million. Even after its whopping $60.6 million opening day, "Revenge of the Fallen" was packing theaters, a sign that unlike critics, who mostly hated the movie, audiences felt they were getting their money's worth and were giving the flick good word of mouth.

Critics "forget what the goal of the movie was. The goal of the movie is to entertain and have fun," said Rob Moore, vice chairman of Paramount, which is distributing "Transformers" for DreamWorks. "What the audience tells us is, `We couldn't be more entertained and having more fun.' They kind of roll their eyes at the critics and say, `You have no idea what you're talking about.'"

According to Paramount's exit polls, 91 percent of the audience thought the sequel was as good as or better than the first "Transformers," which received far better reviews.

Most of Hollywood's all-time biggest hits are accompanied by either good or at least passable reviews, and some can be among the year's most-acclaimed, such as this year's "Up" and "Star Trek" and last year's "The Dark Knight," "WALL-E" and "Iron Man."

Not so for the new "Transformers." On Rottentomatoes.com , a Web site that compiles critics' opinions, the sequel had only 38 positive reviews out of 187, a lowly 20 percent rating usually reserved for box-office duds.

'All My Life', 'The Wedding' pilot review

Yesterday's Monday night saw the premier of two original teleseryes. Firts was on 6pm with GMA's 'All My Life' starring the Kapuso network's hottest love team to date, Aljur Abrenica and Kris Bernal. The series serves as the lead in for GMA Network's primetime newscast.

The series promised a fresh take on drama series shown in the local boobtube. It banks of the recently found fame of the Aljur-Kris tandem. The network also claimed the series to be romantic and family-oriented.

SHELU89 say: Though undeniably Aljur and Kris show great chemistry on screen, the shows concept and premise is already predictable and the repetitive. It follows the tradition Philippine drama wherein the start shows the lead stars as kids and will eventually grow into adults and fall in love with one another. But overall, the series has great potential as long as the writers will make sure that audience will be able to take a grip on every episodes without having the 'sawa' factor.
On the other hand, on 10pm, ABS-CBN premiered its latest original teleserye offering 'The Wedding'. The series marked the return of Anne Curtis to primetime TV after her last fantaserye 'Dyosa'. It also stars Derek Ramsay and Zanjoe Marudo as Ann'es leading men.

The network promoted the show as a light romantic comedy which will serve as a breather from its lead-in 'Tayong Dalawa' which is a heavy classical Pinoy drama. The premise is simple, very unlikely for a Filipino drama which often employs convoluted and complex plots.

SHELU89 say: The casting is great for the supporting casts but the three leads lacked the most important element in a romantic series, chemistry. Anne and Derek may look great in the TV screen together having physical features that complement one another but they lack the kilig factor (its my own opinion). Zanjoe may be a better actor in this series, showing much improvement from his previous projects but again, they don't have the required chemistry (referring to Anne). 'The Wedding' is pitted against GMA's Korean drama 'Cruel Love' which is very boring giving the kapamilya teleserye an upperhand on the competition.

Jackson's riches-to-rags story a mystery

The finances of Michael Jackson, the pop icon who died this week at age 50, remain largely a mystery after a riches-to-rags story of one of the leading figures in the music world.

The music legend may have been a billionaire at the time of his death Thursday but his finances saw a roller-coaster ride that left him struggling with debt after his 2005 acquittal on charges of child molestation.

Jackson earned millions from his own music but also made a shrewd move in 1985 to buy the music publisher ATV, owner of the Beatles' catalogue, for $47.5 million.

A key to his finances, this unit was merged with Sony a decade later and included rights to music from not only the Beatles but from Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Lady Gaga and the Jonas Brothers.

The finances of Sony/ATV remain secret but sources familiar with the enterprise say its value was some $2 billion, half of which was in a trust set up by Jackson.

Forbes magazine estimated his net worth in 2003 at $350 million, but said his spending was unsustainable. Other estimates placed his worth higher, but he never made the magazine's list of billionaires.

The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that Jackson was earning $19 million a year at the time of his death, of which $7 million came from Sony/ATV.

Yet Jackson was notorious for burning through cash, and in 2008 was in danger of losing his Neverland ranch in California for defaulting on a $24.5-million loan.

Evidence at his trial indicated Jackson spent $20 to $30 million a year and had accumulated debts of some $270 million.

Jackson lived for several years as a recluse but was bailed out by Tom Barrack of the private equity firm Colony Capital.

With backing of Anschutz Entertainment Group led by billionaire Philip Anschutz, Jackson agreed to perform his first concerts since 1997 in London, which could have produced an estimated $50 million to $100 million.

Jackson also was involved financially with a Bahrain prince that resulted in litigation until they reached an out-of-court-settlement last year in a seven million dollar lawsuit.

Jackson had been due to appear at the High Court in London to defend himself over allegations that he owed the money to Sheikh Abdulla bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the second son of the king of Bahrain.

The sheikh's lawyer said his client had supported Jackson financially after the 2005 trial: he notably accepted a request for one million dollars in April 2005 and paid the $2.2 million legal bill for the court case.

Jackson signed a contract to record albums, write an autobiography and stage shows. Under the terms of that, document seven million dollars were to be deducted from the artist's royalties to pay for expenses, the lawyer had said.

Other reports indicated Fortress Investment Group bailed out Jackson in 2006, but sources familiar with the group said any debts owed by the pop singer had been repaid.

Billionaire pop king left $500M in debts

Michael Jackson the singer was also Michael Jackson the billion-dollar business.

Yet after selling more than 61 million albums in the United States and having a decade-long attraction open at Disney theme parks, he left behind a mountain of debt—totaling about $500 million, according to sources cited by The Wall Street Journal—and an unfulfilled comeback many hoped would erase his financial troubles.

The moonwalking pop star drove the growth of music videos, vaulting cable channel MTV into the popular mainstream after its launch in 1981.

His 1982 hit “Thriller,” still the second best-selling US album of all time, spawned a John Landis-directed music video that MTV played every hour on the hour.

Five years later, “Bad” sold 22 million copies. In 1991, he signed a $65-million recording deal with Sony.

Jackson was so popular that The Walt Disney Co. hitched its wagon to his star in 1986, opening a 3-D movie at its parks called “Captain EO,” produced by George Lucas and directed by Francis Ford Coppola.

One of Jackson’s shrewdest deals at the height of his fame in 1985 was the $47.5-million acquisition of ATV Music, which owned the copyright to songs written by the Beatles’ John Lennon and Paul McCartney. The catalogue provided Jackson a steady stream of income and the ability to afford a lavish lifestyle.

Worth more than $1B

His top assets, including copyrights to his own songs and his stake in the Beatles’ song catalogue, are worth more than $1 billion.

In 1988, Jackson bought the sprawling Neverland ranch for $14.6 million, a fantasy-like 1,012-hectare property nestled in the hills of Santa Barbara County’s wine country.

But the bombshell hit in 1993 when he was accused of molesting a 13-year-old boy.

“That kind of represents the beginning of the walk down a tragic path, financially, emotionally, spiritually, psychologically, legally,” said Michael Levine, his publicist at the time.

He settled with the boy’s family, but other accounts of his alleged pedophilia began to emerge.

When he ran into further financial problems, he agreed to a deal with Sony in 1995 to merge ATV with Sony’s library of songs and sold Sony music publishing rights for $95 million. In 2001, he used his ATV assets as collateral to secure $200 million in loans from Bank of America.

As his financial problems continued, Jackson began to borrow large sums of money.

In 2003, Jackson was arrested on charges he molested another 13-year-old boy. The trial ended in an acquittal. One accountant testified the singer was spending $20 million to $30 million more per year than he earned.

In March of last year, Jackson faced foreclosure on Neverland. He also repeatedly failed to make mortgage payments on a house in Los Angeles.

In addition, Jackson was forced to defend himself against a slew of lawsuits, including a $7-million claim from Sheik Abdulla bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the second son of the king of Bahrain. The lawsuit was settled for an undisclosed amount.

Time and again, however, Jackson found a way to wring cash out of high-value assets, borrowing tens of millions at a time or leaning on wealthy friends for advice, if not for money.

Another wealthy benefactor came to Jackson’s aid last year as he faced the prospect of losing Neverland in a public auction. Billionaire Thomas Barrack agreed to bail out the singer and set up a joint venture with Jackson that took ownership of the vast estate.

A final piece of the financial jigsaw puzzle fell into place in March, when billionaire Philip Anschutz’s concert promotion company AEG Live announced it would promote 50 shows in London’s O2 arena.

Tickets sold out, and the first show of the “This is It” tour was set for July 8, then postponed to July 13, fueling speculation that Jackson was suffering from health ailments.

Michael Jackson ranks with Elvis, Beatles

He was perhaps the most exciting performer of his generation, known for his feverish, crotch-grabbing dance moves and his high-pitched voice punctuated with squeals and titters. His single sequined glove, tight, military-style jacket and aviator sunglasses were trademarks second only to his ever-changing, surgically altered appearance.

“For Michael to be taken away from us so suddenly at such a young age, I just don’t have the words,” said Quincy Jones, who produced “Thriller.” “He was the consummate entertainer and his contributions and legacy will be felt upon the world forever. I’ve lost my little brother today, and part of my soul has gone with him.”

Jackson ranked alongside Elvis Presley and the Beatles as the biggest pop sensations of all time. He united two of music’s biggest names when he was briefly married to Presley’s daughter, Lisa Marie, and Jackson’s death immediately evoked that of Presley himself, who died at age 42 in 1977.

As years went by, Jackson became an increasingly freakish figure — a middle-aged man-child weirdly out of touch with grown-up life. His skin became lighter, his nose narrower, and he spoke in a breathy, girlish voice. He surrounded himself with children at his Neverland ranch, often wore a germ mask while traveling and kept a pet chimpanzee named Bubbles as one of his closest companions.

“It seemed to me that his internal essence was at war with the norms of the world. It’s as if he was trying to defy gravity,” said Michael Levine, a Hollywood publicist who represented Jackson in the early 1990s. He called Jackson a “disciple of P.T. Barnum” and said the star appeared fragile at the time but was “much more cunning and shrewd about the industry than anyone knew.”

Jackson caused a furor in 2002 when he playfully dangled his infant son, Prince Michael II, over a hotel balcony in Berlin while a throng of fans watched from below.

In 2005, he was cleared of charges he molested a 13-year-old cancer survivor at Neverland in 2003. He had been accused of plying the boy with alcohol and groping him, and of engaging in strange and inappropriate behavior with other children.

The case followed years of rumors about Jackson and young boys. In a TV documentary, he had acknowledged sharing his bed with children, a practice he described as sweet and not at all sexual.

Despite the acquittal, the lurid allegations that came out in court took a fearsome toll on his career and image, and he fell into serious financial trouble.

Singer Michael Jackson dead at 50

Michael Jackson, the sensationally gifted child star who rose to become the “King of Pop” and the biggest celebrity in the world only to fall from his throne in a freakish series of scandals, died Thursday. He was 50.

Jackson died at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles. Ed Winter, the assistant chief coroner for Los Angeles County, confirmed his office had been notified of the death and would handle the investigation.

The circumstances of Jackson’s death were not immediately clear. Jackson was not breathing when Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded to a call at his Los Angeles home about 12:30 p.m., Capt. Steve Ruda told the Los Angeles Times. The paramedics performed CPR and took him to the hospital, Ruda told the newspaper.

Jackson’s death brought a tragic end to a long, bizarre, sometimes farcical decline from his peak in the 1980s, when he was popular music’s premier all-around performer, a uniter of black and white music who shattered the race barrier on MTV, dominated the charts and dazzled even more on stage.

His 1982 album “Thriller” — which included the blockbuster hits “Beat It,” “Billie Jean” and “Thriller” — is the best-selling album of all time, with an estimated 50 million copies sold worldwide.

The public first knew him in the late 1960s, when as a boy he was the precocious, spinning lead singer of the Jackson 5, the music group he formed with his four older brothers. Among their No. 1 hits were “I Want You Back,” “ABC,” and “I’ll Be There.”

ABS-CBN extends 'May Bukas Pa' up to 2010

Good news to avid viewers of 'May Bukas Pa'.

ABS-CBN Channel 2 Head Cory Vidanes recently announced that the network decided to extend primetime's no. 1 program up to early January of 2010.

The announcement was made after the thanksgiving mass attended by ABS-CBN executives and the cast of the top rating series.

"Thank you sa mga nanonood ng 'May Bukas Pa.' Sana po ay patuloy niyo pa din po itong panoorin. Salamat po," child star Zaijan Jaramilla said, the lead actor of 'May Bukas Pa'.

Many critics attributed the success and high ratings of 'May Bukas Pa' to its timely concept of hope and healing in this time wherein the country is facing a turbulent battle against poverty and corruption. The series changed the fce of primetime which was previously ruled by violent fantasy series and convoluted plots of many soap operas.

The show, during its launched, promised a simple premise which will center on a young kid which can talk to someone he calls 'Bro', referring to a divine persona implied to be God. The series is a loose adaptation of popular novel 'Marcelino pan y vino'.

"Extended [kami] until 2010 which is good. Marami pang kwento at aral ang aabangan sa ‘May Bukas Pa,'" actress Dina Bonnevie happily shared. "Maraming tao na ang sabi nila kaya gusto nila 'yong ‘May Bukas Pa’ kasi sa hirap ng buhay minsan gusto mo ng magnakaw o gumawa ng masama. Pero when you watch ‘May Bukas Pa’ they just get inspired.

'The Proposal' No. 1 at US box office

Comedy, whether it's romantic or raunchy, innocent or goofy, is on a roll at the the box office and helped end a three-week mini-slump for the industry.

Thanks to the surprising strength of Disney's "The Proposal" and the solid opening of Sony's " Year One," this weekend's box office was up almost 3% over the same weekend a year ago. That ended three weekends of negative results in comparison to last June. And with "Transformers" and the latest " Harry Potter" on the way, box-office watchers can put away the Advil for now.

It wasn't just the new comedies driving attendance this weekend. "The Hangover" is still packing a punch for Warner Bros. three weeks after it opened, taking in $26.9 million, according to Hollywood.com. Disney/Pixar's "Up" raked in another $21.3 million, and with $224.1 million total box office, it already has passed "Wall-E" in U.S. box office in just four weeks.

"Comedy is on an extreme roll," said Chuck Viane, president of distribution for Walt Disney Studios. Unless, of course, you used to work on "Saturday Night Live." Eddie Murphy's "Imagine That" took in only $3.1 million for Paramount in its second weekend while Will Ferrell's "Land of the Lost" pulled in just $4 million for Universal Pictures in its third week of release.

Viane said the $34.1 million that "The Proposal" earned was, to put it mildly, a surprise. "We never expected to double the best Sandra Bullock movie ever ["Premonition"]. Most industry estimates for the movie, which also may move Bullock's costar Ryan Reynolds into leading-man status, had it opening in the mid-$20-million range.

As expected, the audience for "The Proposal" was mostly female. But Viane said he expected that to change in the weeks ahead. "More and more guys are hearing how funny it is and are going along for the ride."

The other big comedy premiere, Sony's "Year One," starring Jack Black and Michael Cera as odd-couple cavemen, did a respectable $20.2 million, which was in line with industry projections. Rory Bruer, president of worldwide distribution at Sony Pictures Entertainment, said he was surprised that 53% of the audience for "Year One" was over 21. "We thought it would play much younger than it did," he said, adding that $20.2 million is "a good start for us and in the range we were expecting."

Here are the top 10 films at the US domestic box office this weekend, according to studio estimates and Hollywood.com:

1. "The Proposal" (Disney): Opened to $34.1 million.

2. "The Hangover" (Warner Bros./Legendary): $26.9 million, down only 18%. Domestic total: $152.9 million.

3. "Up" (Disney/Pixar): $21.3, off just 31%. Domestic total: $224.1 million

4. "Year One" (Sony/Columbia Pictures): Opened to $20.2 million

5. "Taking of Pelham 123" (Sony/Columbia Pictures): $11.3 million, a 52% drop from its opening weekend. Domestic total: $43.3 million.

6. "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian" (Fox): $7.3 million, down 24%. Domestic total: $156 million.

7. "Star Trek" (Paramount/Spyglass): $4.7 million, down 14%. Domestic total: $239.4 million.

8. "Land of the Lost" (Universal): $4 million, down 56%. Domestic total: $43.7 million.

9. "Imagine That" (Paramount): $3.1 million, down 44%. Domestic total: $11.3 million.

10. "Terminator: Salvation" (Warner Bros./Halcyon): $3.1 million, down 36%. Domestic total: $119.5 million.

'The Wedding' to replace 'Pinoy Bingo Night'

After the dismal performance of Kris Aquino's 'Pinoy Bingo Night', ABS-CBN finally announced that the long delayed romantic series 'The Wedding' will replace the former on its place in the network's highly-rated primetime block.

Since January, ABS-CBN already launched several teasers of 'The Wedding'. But the network cancelled the playdate of the show since one of its stars, Eula Valdez has still running show, 'All About Eve' in rival GMA Network and the two shows may clash on its timeslot.

Now that 'All About Eve' is over, ABS-CBN finally slated 'The Wedding' while the rumored primetime series 'Katorse' is slated for daytime, according to ABS-CBN.com. The Erich Gonzales starrer will try to strengthen the fledgling daytime drama block of the kapamilya network.

Plot:
'The Wedding' is the newest romantic comedy in the ABS-CBN Primetime Bida block. This light dramedy teleserye explores the nature of love, springing from a ‘magical’ feeling, journeying through trials, and later finding its way to the altar. When Candice (Anne Curtis) finds out that her parents are separating, she comes up with a scheme to keep the family intact. Candice asks the help of one of her father’s employees, Marlon (Zanjoe Marudo), to pretend that they are having a relationship and are planning to get married. Amidst their fake relationship, Candice and Marlon will end up falling in love. But before they turn their lie into a truth, Candice’s past love Warren (Derek Ramsay) returns to claim her. Thus begins a complicated, merry-go-round affair that will keep hopeless romantics tuned in every night.

"Hangover" gives Murphy a headache at box office

The party kept rocking for "The Hangover," the first big surprise hit at the North American box office this summer, while Eddie Murphy suffered a headache with his second consecutive flop.

According to studio estimates issued on Sunday, "The Hangover" led the field for a second weekend with ticket sales of $33.4 million across the United States and Canada. The raunchy comedy with a little-known cast becomes the first movie to retain its crown since "Madea Goes to Jail" in February.

The film also took just 10 days to hit the century mark -- $105.4 million, to be exact -- setting a new record for an R-rated movie. The old mark of 11 days was set last year by "Sex and the City."

Industry pundits expect "The Hangover" to hit $200 million -- not bad for a movie that cost a reported $31 million to make. The action revolves around three guys struggling to remember what happened at a wild bachelor party in Las Vegas the night before. It stars Justin Bartha, Bradley Cooper and Ed Helms, and was directed by Todd Phillips of "Old School" fame.

The film, from Time Warner Inc's Warner Bros. Pictures, easily fended off a pair of new entries boasting some major star power.

Columbia Pictures' remake of the 1974 subway-hijacking thriller "The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3," starring Denzel Washington and John Travolta, opened at No. 3 with $25 million, in line with expectations.

"It's a solid opening for us," said Rory Bruer, president of worldwide distribution at the Sony Corp unit.

Washington's last major release was "American Gangster," which opened to $44 million in late 2007. The last time Travolta headlined a drama was in 2004 when "Ladder 49" opened to $26 million. Comparative data are not adjusted for ticket-price inflation.

Murphy, on the other hand, came in at No. 6 this weekend with the Paramount Pictures family comedy "Imagine That," which tallied just $5.7 million.

"We're really disappointed," said Don Harris, executive vice-president of distribution at the Viacom Inc unit.

Murphy previously starred in "Meet Dave," which opened to $5 million last July and finished with $12 million.

Walt Disney Pictures' Pixar cartoon "Up" held at No. 2 with $30.5 million, taking its total to $187.2 million after three weekends. The previous Pixar release, "Wall-E," had earned $163 million in the same span last summer.

Rounding out the top five were the Ben Stiller comedy hit sequel "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian" (Fox) which held steady at No. 4 with $9.6 million in its fourth weekend; and the latest Will Ferrell bomb "Land of the Lost" (Universal), which fell two places to No. 5 with $5.6 million in its second weekend. Their respective totals stand at $143.4 million and $35 million.

Walt Disney Pictures is a unit of Walt Disney Co. 20th Century Fox is a unit of News Corp. Universal Pictures is a unit of General Electric Co's NBC Universal.

In limited release, the feature debut of David Bowie's 38-year-son Duncan Jones, opened strongly. "Moon," starring Sam Rockwell as an astronaut who confronts a clone of himself while mining lunar helium, earned $145,000 from just eight theaters in New York and Los Angeles. The Sony Pictures Classics release expands across the United States throughout June and July.

At the foreign box office, "Terminator Salvation" was the top pick for a second weekend, earning $46.1 million; the overseas total for the Columbia-distributed apocalypse sequel rose to $165.5 million.

Hollywood's Top-Earning Actors

For the past five years, it seemed that Harrison Ford was happier out of the spotlight than on the silver screen. Since 2000, Ford has appeared in only four movies, none of which made much of an impression at the box office.

That all changed in 2008 when Ford strapped back on his trusty whip and went adventuring again in "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," the fourth film in the Indiana Jones series. In order to lure Ford out of his semi-retirement, Paramount agreed to a lucrative deal that split almost all of the film's earnings (after the studio made back its production and advertising costs) between Ford, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas.

As a result of the deal, Ford earned $65 million between June 2008 and June 2009, making him the highest-paid actor on our annual Celebrity 100 list. (Even though the movie was released in May of 2008, Ford didn't earn his money until several months later.)

Coming in behind Ford with $55 million is Adam Sandler. The funnyman had two successful movies last year, "You Don't Mess With The Zohan" and "Bedtime Stories," plus he earned a big paycheck for the upcoming Judd Apatow movie "Funny People," in which he plays a comedian who thinks he might be dying.

In third is Will Smith, often considered in Hollywood to be the one person who can open any movie in the U.S. and abroad. Critics lambasted his two latest movies, "Hancock" and "Seven Pounds," but they were both still hits -- earning $800 million between them.

Eddie Murphy lands in fourth place on our list despite his disastrous film "Meet Dave." The movie, which was made for an estimated $60 million, earned only $50 million at the worldwide box office.

Rounding out the top five is Nicolas Cage. The tireless worker doesn't earn the same size paychecks as people like Smith and Sandler, but he currently has six movies scheduled to hit theaters in the next two years, including "G-Force," about some very smart hamsters, and a live-action version of "The Sorcerer's Apprentice."

Conspicuously low on the list (10th place) is Johnny Depp, who last year ranked second with $72 million. This year he earned $27 million. The reason: no pirate movie. Depp is almost always well paid, but he earns a nice chunk of the profits of the Disney series "Pirates of the Caribbean," which have earned a collective $2.6 billion at the worldwide box office.

Coming in at the bottom of our top 20 is Will Ferrell. The former "Saturday Night Live" star has seen a steady decline in box office revenue for his comedies. Things hit bottom this weekend when his remake of the TV show "Land of the Lost" earned just $18 million at the box office.

8. Rich Asuncion and Imee Marcos
Similarities: From the way they style their hair, to their wide eyes, to the shape of their jaws, these women could easily be mistaken for each other at a glance!

6. Carmina Villaroel and BB Gandanghari
Similarities: Maybe it’s the eyes or the skin-most people aren’t convinced, but there’s just something about the two that makes it seem as if they resemble one another.

Similarities: The three things these two have in common are their white skin, big eyes, and bone structure.

3. Pauline Luna and Janet McBride

2. Vernie Vargas and Eddie Baddeo

Willie madly in love

Willie Revillame and girlfriend Nadine Ignacio were together in Tuesday night’s finals of the Wowowee Olympics at Araneta Coliseum. She stayed with Willie the whole time.

“Wowowee” publicist Ador Saluta who attended the games describes, “Willie’s like a teener in love for the first time. Kinikilig siya, parang bagets.” He adds, “Ramdam ko they were like a dalaga and binata in love in a scene from an old film. Dinadaan na lang sa pakanta-kanta sa ilalim ng puno. Hehehe.”

This contradicts Jobert Sucaldito’s buzz that Willie and Nadine have broken in yesterday’s “Showbiz Mismo” over DZMM. His reason for saying this was because Willie frequently expresses in Wowowee that nobody loves him. He probably does not know that it's Willie's way of expressing that he's single and needs somebody to love. Willie, by the way, has not admitted Nadine is his girlfriend.

Willie shelled out the P1 million cash prize for the recently concluded Wowowee Olympics. He has new project the games with the Wowowee Team and Star Magic All-Stars take place on Saturday at the Big Dome at 3pm. A project with Johnny “Mr M” Manahan, Wowowee Olympics will be for the benefit of marginalized children featured in “Wowowee.”

Willie explained, “This game is for a good cause. Lahat ng maiipon namin na pera ay mapupunta sa Bantay Bata at Bayanijuan. Kapag nagtuloy-tuloy na ito, magtatayo kami ng Wowowee Foundation. Wala kaming makukuha dito even a single cent. Pati mga celebrity guests wala silang bayad. And syempre it’s about time na magsama-sama ang mga artista.”

The Star Magic Team is composed of hunk celebrities namely Diether Ocampo, Gerald Anderson, Zanjoe Marudo, Rayver Cruz, Jason Abalos, Carlo Guevarra, Xian Lim, Angelo Patrimonio and PFF ex-Participantes, Jose Sarasola, RJ Calipus and Ram Sagad, led by Mr. M as their coach.

On the Wowowee Team, the group is spiced by Cesar Montano, John Estrada, Vhong Navarro, Derek Ramsay and Gab Valenciano. “Maganda yung mga ganitong activities for us, we develop bonding, teamwork and camaraderie. And of course, hindi naman dapat kami puro work, we also have time to enjoy through sports,” added Derek.

The Star Magic team members also stressed that Gerald Anderson will be their key player. “Wag kayong mag-alala, mas guwapo tayo sa mga yan,” Willie jokingly shouted to his team as they had their play-off practice. The host also joined them and is considered to be their team’s key player.

The Wowowee staff showed their all out support as they watched and cheered for the stars during the practice. Also present were the Wowowee girls Saicy Aguila and RR Enriquez as well as director Bobot Mortiz. Ex-PBA player, Alvin Patrimonio was also there to watch the practice.

Who will be hailed the kings of the court – the Wowowee Team or the Star Magic All Stars?

Catch the much-awaited face-off on the hard court this Saturday, June 13 at the Big Dome. For ticket inquiries for the upcoming Wowowee-lympics, call Ticketnet and stay tuned to your favorite noontime show, Wowowee, every afternoon on ABS-CBN.

QTV11 shows honored in US International Film and Video Festival

Q Channel 11 continues its winning streak as two of its shows won in the 2009 US International Film and Video Festival (USIFVF).

Emerging as one of the top programs among 1,100 entries from 22 countries, Rajo Red: The Business of Elegance won the USIFVF Silver Screen Award and Reunions, hosted by Jessica Soho, was cited with a Certificate for Creative Excellence, both in the Documentary: Motivational, Inspirational category.

The Los Angeles-based USIFVF, established in 1967, attracts the world's biggest networks and creators of Business, Television, Documentary, Educational, Entertainment, Industrial, and Informational productions.

Produced by Q's Entertainment TV Group, in partnership with the House of Laurel, Rajo Red is a special documentary on the celebration of the 15th anniversary of Philippine fashion icon Rajo Laurel. The program featured the evolution of Rajo's masterpieces, a gala fashion show for a cause, Rajo's arduous journey to success, and his inspirations and dreams.

Public affairs program Reunions' "Multiple Reunions" episode, on the other hand, featured three reunion stories, that of 63-yr old Josefina Ramirez, the Barbuco family, and Sgt. Douglas Holcomb. Ramirez had been searching for her siblings for 50 years; the Barbuco family fervently prayed that they be reunited with their 33-year old, mentally challenged son; and Filipino-American Sgt. Douglas Holcomb, who was born in the Philippines but supposedly abandoned by both his parents, wanted to trace his roots.

Rajo Red and Reunions stood tall at the USIFVF, along with such programs as Marathon Love (USA), which aired on the Discovery Health Channel; Controlling the Discourse: The Putin Empire and the Media, from NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corp); and Nigella Express (featuring Nigella Lawson) from Pacific Television, London, United Kingdom, with support from Food Network, USA.

NEW YORK WINNERS. In a different international film festival last January, Q Channel 11 programs/specials were also honored. These are Inno Sotto: A Special Fashion Documentary, The Sweet Life, Chef to Go, Ang Pinaka, News on Q, and Draw the Line were winners at the 2009 New York Festival.

Last year, Q Channel 11 show Proudly Filipina won USIFVF's Gold Camera award in the Documentary: Motivational, Inspirational category.

TV Review: 'Adik Sa 'Yo'

After comments of lack of creativity and the frequency of remakes on its programming, GMA Network attempted to bring back it old image of innovation and its unafraid attitude on taking big creative reaches through an original material on its primetime block which was already swamped with an American remake, a komiks remake, and a dubbed-foreign serial.

As a breather to its line-up, GMA aims to bring back loyal followers and stick glued on the kapuso network with 'Adik Sa 'Yo'. A romantic-comedy series that promises to bring laughters and fun, while craving and asking for more on an 'exciting' story of love.

Well, romantic-comedies are already not new to Philippine primetime. ABS-CBN first attempted the format with the same stars of 'Adik Sa 'Yo', Marvin Agustin and Jolina Magdangal. 'Labs Ko si Babes', ruled the airwaves then.

GMA Network, also with newly-transferred Marvin Agustin and Jolina Magdangal, produced 'I Luv New York' with Jennilyn Mercado and Mark Herras. As an answer, ABS-CBN launched another romantic-comedy set also abroad, this time with Toni Gonzaga and Luis Manzano starring in 'Crazy For You'.

Many shows also fall on the romantic-comedy genre like Korean remakes 'My Girl', 'Ako si Kim Sam Soon' and just recently, 'Only You' starring TV superstar Angel Locsin with Sam Milby and Diether Ocampo.

The series stars four GMA stars with several TV hits and not-so-blockbuster-hit films on their belts. This series reunites Marvin Agustin and Jolina Magdangal. The show also marks the first time that Dennis Trillo is being paired with Jennica Garcia. The series is helmed by award-winning director Joel Lamangan.

The pilot episoe had some hilarious scenes but most of which are overboard and simply just unfunny. Some stars act artificially, with traces of being trying soOoo hard.

Marvin's portrayal of the character also tends to be annoying. His acting can't also be distinguished from his last role in 'Lalola'. He and Jolina tend to be pa-tweetums when in fact it already out-of-place with their respective ages.

The one who had strikingly stood out is Jennica Garcia, with her out-of-the-box performance though much improvement is needed. It must be because her character is tailor-made just for her. But she also has this tendency to go OA and slapstick.

The show also lacks great supporting cast to the four lead stars. Joey Marquez tend to be so loud and Elisabeth Oropeza, being a very good actress, also get to be slapstick and OA.

Carrie Prejean Reacts To Losing Miss California Crown

Carrie Prejean claims it was her answer during April's Miss USA pageant about gay marriage that led to her ultimately being stripped of the Miss California title on Wednesday.

Access Hollywood's Billy Bush broke the news to the beauty queen about her dethroning during a phone call for "The Billy Bush" show and in addition to saying she was surprised by the news, Prejean said the decision made by the Miss California Organization, and supported by Miss Universe pageant owner Donald Trump, was due to her expressing her view that marriage should be between a man and a woman. Prejean shared her views in answer to a question from Perez Hilton during the Miss USA competition.

"That's the first that I've heard of it Billy," Prejean said of her firing. "It's just because of my answer, I think. None of this would be happening right now if I just said, 'Yeah, gays should get married. You're right Perez Hilton."

As previously reported on SHELU89, on Wednesday, Miss California USA Executive Director Keith Lewis said in a statement that Prejean was fired from her post "based solely on contract violations including Ms. Prejean's unwillingness to make appearances on behalf of the Miss California USA Organization."

When asked about communication between herself and the organization, Prejean said they have been talking and she has been making appearances as Miss California.

"I've tried to reach out to them and I've done several appearances and I'm gonna be presenting at the Special Olympics this weekend as an honorary guest," she said, revealing she was on her way to an appearance in San Diego when she spoke to Bush. "I mean, I've been cooperating with them. I don't see why this is happening. This is the first I've heard of it."

In May, less than a month after making her gay marriage comments at the Miss USA pageant, semi-nude photos of Prejean hit the Web. While her pageant contract prohibited nudity, Trump decided the pictures were tasteful and she should be allowed to keep her crown. However, the day after that decision, Miss California Co-Executive Director Shanna Moakler quit the organization claiming she lost faith in the Miss Universe Organization after the Prejean decision.

Miss California Carrie Prejean is fired

Carrie Prejean has been stripped of her Miss California title.

"The Miss California USA Organization, in conjunction with the Miss Universe Organization and with the blessing of its owner, Mr. Donald J. Trump, announced today the termination of Carrie Prejean as Miss California USA 2009, citing continued breach of contract issues," the Miss California Organization said in a statement to Access Hollywood.

The group kicked the controversial beauty queen from her post due to "contract violations including Ms. Prejean's unwillingness to make appearances on behalf of the Miss California USA organization," the pageant's Executive Director, Keith Lewis, said in a statement.

Last month, Trump decided that Prejean would be allowed to keep her crown despite racy photos of the 22-year-old surfacing on the Internet. But Lewis claims that in the weeks that followed, the beauty queen did not step up to the plate.

"Since that time it has become abundantly clear that Carrie is unwilling to fulfill her obligations under our contract and work together," Lewis' statement continued.

Billy Bush broke the news to Prejean on Wednesday afternoon when he called her for Access Hollywood and "The Billy Bush Show."

Miss Malibu Tami Farrell, who was the First Runner-Up, is now Miss California.

In addition to the semi-nude photo scandal, Prejean's reign as Miss California also created headlines at the Miss USA pageant in April after she answered a question from Perez Hilton regarding her stance on gay marriage. She said she believed marriage "should be between a man and a woman."

Shanna Moakler quit the Miss California Organization, where she had served as a co-executive director back in May after Trump let Prejean keep her crown. When asked last month by Access Hollywood's Billy Bush if she would return to the group if Prejean quit, Moakler said she would.
