ABS-CBN to remake "Galema, Anak ni Zuma"

The longest running komiks in the Philippines will be breathen into life by ABS-CBN as the Kapamilya network decided to produce the TV serialization of "Galema, Anak ni Zuma".

From the creative minds of director Ben Yalung and writer Jim Fernandez, the story is about mythical creatures with snakes attached to their bodies. This was serialized by Aliwan Komiks from 1976 to 1984. In 1985, a film was made from the said komiks with Max Laurel cast as the evil Zuma and Snooky Serna as his kind-hearted daughter named Galema. The movie was followed with its equally successful sequel "Anak ni Zuma".

It is not yet sure if this will be a primetime series since there are already many shows pending for airing in ABS-CBN's primetime block. This might be a good daytime series, though, daytime is best for soap operas and heavy drama series.

One can observe that ABS-CBN has been buying rights of movies with unconventional plots, stories and even titles to be serialized. From "Kambal sa Uma" to "Galema, Anak ni Zuma". This is far from the rival network's attempt to secure the rights of film titles which are mostly heavy dramas.

Judy Ann Santos, Ryan Agoncillo to star in a new sitcom

Who said "sitcoms" in the Philippines are dead?

To prove that sitcoms can also be successful cash cows in a period where reality and drama series rule, ABS-CBN will launch its newest situational comedy starring real life partners Judy Ann Santos and Ryan Agoncillo.

The two will topbill "George and Cecil", which will air every Sunday night and in the healm is the award-winning director Jose Javier Reyes. The production team behind the blockbusters "Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo" and "Sakal, Sakali, Saklolo"are also the ones who will give life to the said sitcom.

"May Bukas Pa" regains no. 1 slot in National ratings (March 24-26, 2009)

Nationwide daytime is dominated by ABS-CBN's "Wowowee" but not far are GMA-'s Sinenovelas which continuously enjoy high ratings both in Mega Manila and overall national ratings.

ABS-CBN still occupy the top 4 most watched primetime shows with "May Bukas Pa" regaining its throne from erstwhile no. 1 "I Love Betty La Fea". "Tayong Dalawa" continued its winning streak against the so-called kapuso loveteam royalies , Dingdaong Dantes and Marian Rivera's "Ang Babaeng Hinugot Sa Aking Tadyang".

"SNN; Showbiz News Ngayon" is facing tough competition as it lost for the whole week against "All About Eve". The said GMA series was relegated to a later timeslot with the premiere of "Zorro" and its failure to topple "Tayong Dalawa". "Zorro" also failed to cause a dent on "May Bukas Pa" as the latter continued its winning streak.

After its debut at no. 1 in Mega Manila,Richard Guttierrez's "Zorro" was overtaken by another kapuso series "Totoy Bato", relegating it to the second spot for Tuesday to Thursday ratings according to TNS Media Research.

"Ang Babaeng Hinugot Sa Aking Tadyang" showed improvement on its ratings though it cannot widen its gap with ABS-CBN's "Tayong Dalawa", the kapamilya network's highest rated show.

"SRO Cinemaserye: Ganti" premiered on March 26 with impressive numbers amidst its late timeslot. It is also interesting to note that GMA's anime "Slamdunk" rated higher than morning shows "SIS" and "Ruffa and Ai".

Daytime viewing is dominated by GMA the same way it dominated the nationwide survey.

Sarah Geronimo and John Lloyd Cruz to star in Pinoy "Meteor Garden"?

Sarah Geronimo and John Lloyd Cruz is said to play the lead roles in the upcoming Philippine version of the hit Asianovela "Meteor Garden". This is confirmed according to a report by Byxbuzz, an entertainment blog.

After the great success of "A Very Special Love" and "You Changed My Life", Sarah and John Lloyd are already preparing for the third and hopefully, the final installment of the Laida-Miggy love saga. The production of our very own version was temporarily postponed since mainland China has already started airing their own version. Certain provisions of the copyright prevented ABS-CBN to air its own version simultaneously.

The phenomenal franchise started the Asianovela craze in the Philippines with Taiwan's "Meteor Garden". It rated so high, making it the second highest rated show in the history of Philippine television (which was eventually surpassed by Pacquiao's fights). After two very succesful seasons, the stars of the show became household names and gained immense popularity.

Japan followed, releasing its own version "Hana Yori Dango" which was aired in GMA-7. It did not replicate the success of "Meteor Garden". The series ran two seasons n the Kapuso network.

South Korea is the third country to produce its own version and it said to be the best ever made. The said series titled "Boys Over Flowers" became 2008's no. 1 series in Korea. ABS-CBN announced that it had bought the rights to air the said series in the Philippines.

Fans can't wait to witness our very own version come to life via the trusted name in Philippine broadcast industry, ABS-CBN!

Pacman settles dispute with Solar

After its four-day stand off with Solar Sports, Manny Pacquiao reportedly settled the issue and decided to continue its two-year contract with Solar Sports. This is according to a report of GMA's "Flash Report".

In this development, Solar Sports still holds the exclusive rights of airing Pacquiao's fights in the Philippines which buys block time in GMA-7. It was last Tuesday that Pacman announced in "TV Patrol World" that he will be partnering with media giant ABS-CBN, rescinding his contract with Solar Sports.

The said announcement prompted Solar's executives to meet with Manny in Los Angeles, California where the boxer is currently training.

After the meeting, Pacquiao’s lawyer, Atty. Franklin Gacal, read a statement where Pacman apologized to the public for the confusion caused by his abrupt decision.

ABS-CBN has still no official statement regarding this matter.

Ruffa Mae Quinto strikes on Mo Twister

Instead of spilling her thoughts about the recent controversy she's into, Ruffa Mae Quinto gave her first interview after her concert tour in the US to her show's rival.

In "The Buzz", Ruffa expressed her disappointment and disgust to her co-host Mo Twister after the latter alleged to include the sexy commedienne in the Dra. Viki Belo-Hayden Kho break-up.

"Ayun, ewan ko sa kanya, hindi ko naman siya friend. So, wala na akong care," Ruffa Mae's explosive statement. "Trabaho is trabaho. Ayoko namang mamrublema dahil lang sa kanya, di ba? Pero ganun siya talaga. Bahala na siya sa buhay niya, choice niya 'yon, di ba?"

"E, bastos siyang tao e, alam mo yun! E, ganun siya. E, katrabaho ko naman siya, so I'll be professional na lang siguro. And I think okay lang naman yata sa kanya yung ganun, e, medyo insensitive siya. So, siya yun, e, di ba? Gusto rin naman yata niya na ganun yung image niya. Ewan ko sa kanya!

"Hindi rin dahil bakit ako magtatanim ng sama ng loob... magkakaroon ng feeling na hateful sa isang tao, alam mo yun, dahil sa kanya? Hindi na rin, 'no! I don't mind, I don't care. I just don't care about him. I don't like him. I like him as ano...as co-host. 'Kala ko okay naman, mabait naman siya. And mahilig naman siyang mag-sorry, maglambing after. Pero this time siguro, let's leave it at that."

"Masyado akong masaya. I feel so grateful, I'm so blessed. Marami pong nanood ng show namin at nakapag-U.S. tour ako. At siya, kung anuman yung ginagawa niya dito, sa sarili naming show, problema na niya 'yon, di ba? Basta ako, wala akong ginagawa sa kanya."

"Puwede naman siyang mag-sorry. Pero hindi ko na siya gusto talaga bilang a friend. Too much na, e. Kasi ilan taon na rin kaming magkasama, walang pagbabago, e."

"Naku, ayokong magmensahe sa kanya, 'no! Kaloka ka! Ang cheap-cheap mo!" sabi ni Rufa Mae, sabay tawa. "Hindi, ang sama lang niya. Ang sama niya! Alam mo yun, nasasamaan ako. Bahala na siya sa buhay niya."

On the other hand, on the POV segment, the hosts expressed their feelings on the said issue.

"Ako, kausap ko si P-Chi [Rufa Mae] kanina. Galit na galit talaga siya sa co-host niya sa show," Ruffa said asking Kris thereafter, "Do you like him?"

"As I told you, we have no relationship. I don't have feelings, wise or otherwise," Kris answered and returning the question to Ruffa, "Ikaw?"

"No, I don't really like him!" Ruffa straightly answered. "But I'm very good friends with his best friend, Donita [Rose]."

Boy Abunda, on the other hand, gave a short yet a very meaningful statement. "Ako, I stand by Peachy. I stand by my talent and friend. Yun lang ang aking masasabi."

Ruffa then added, "Well, anyway, he doesn't like us either. Kasi whenever he watches us, sabi ng mga PA [production assistants] ko, kasi yung PA ko pumupunta rin sa kabila, he always makes us pintas. So, I don't like him na."

"Well, alangan naman magustuhan nila tayo, di ba? Pero ito na lang siguro ang masasabi ko, sila may time panoorin tayo. Tayo, wala, di ba?" Kris in sarcasm.

"Uy, in fairness, yung kapatid ko naman nandun. Hi, Mond!" Ruffa said.

Hollywood's Top 5 Highest paid teens

No. 1 (Tie): Daniel Radcliffe
$25 Million

Last summer the British-born boy wizard, 19, signed a jaw-dropping contract worth an estimated $50 million to continue his leading role in the last two parts of the Harry Potter series. The final story, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, has since been split into two movies, which should mean even more cash for him. Radcliffe also played the title role in BBC's TV movie My Boy Jack, a World War I story about Rudyard Kipling's ill-fated son, and he'll be baring all on Broadway in Equus.

No. 1 (Tie): Miley Cyrus
$25 Million

Cyrus' 70-date Best of Both Worlds concert tour sold out faster than you could say "Hannah Montana," leaving legions of screaming girls scrambling for tickets. In the past year, the 15-year-old also sold millions of CDs, signed a book deal and began filming a movie based on her Disney Channel series. She'll soon lend her voice to an animated canine comedy, Bolt.

No. 3: Mary-Kate And Ashley Olsen
$15 Million

They're 22 now, but the pint-sized twins still learn most of their income from their tween-oriented clothing and accessories outfit, Dualstar. They're also designing two lines for adults, the Row and Elizabeth & James.

No. 4: Jonas Brothers
$12 Million

In the past year, these tween rockers, ages 15 to 20, pulled in $9 million from touring, plus another $3 million from CD sales, merchandise and television deals. In the works: a movie, a reality series and a TV drama.

No. 5: Zac Efron
$5.8 Million

The High School Musical star and tween heartthrob, 20, had success last summer in Hairspray. Three upcoming movies: Seventeen Again (a comedy), Me and Orson Welles (an indie) and this fall's highly anticipated High School Musical 3.

Oprah gives Rihanna words of wisdom

Singers Chris Brown and Rihanna are reportedly back together after Brown allegedly attacked Rihanna Feb. 8 in Los Angeles -- the same night the two were scheduled to perform at the 2009 Grammy awards.

Photos of Rihanna's battered face, first revealed by celebrity gossip Web Site TMZ, sent shockwaves over the Internet.

Court documents related to the case allege that Brown punched Rihanna while driving and bit her ear.

Television host Oprah Winfrey spoke out about the incident, warning Rihanna, "Love doesn't hurt. I've been saying this to women for years -- love doesn't hurt," she said. "And if a man hits you once, he will hit you again. He will hit you again. I don't care what his plea is, he will hit you again."

Oprah Winfrey is a strong advocate against domestic abuse. She says she was a victim of physical and sexual abuse as a child, including being raped by her cousin when she was just 9 years old. Winfrey will air a special on domestic abuse on her television show "The Oprah Winfrey Show" March 12, 2009. Winfrey said the episode is "dedicated to all the Rihannas of the world."

"Heroes" star slaps photographer

Even stars lose their cool at times and lash out. "Heroes" actress Hayden Panettiere had a diva moment when she reportedly slapped a television reporter at a fund-raising event in Honolulu March 7, 2009.

According to Us Weekly magazine, when a television reporter asked Panettiere, "May we talk with you?" the actress turned around and screamed, "Don't you ever touch me!"

But Panettiere didn't stop there. She let the paparazzi have it one more time, saying, "You all make my life miserable" and refused to answer any questions, according to Us Weekly. Perhaps her recent split from actor Milo Ventimiglia is what has Panettiere so high-strung.

JLo is a high maintenance diva!

It has been years since she has been "Jenny From the Block," and singer-actress Jennifer Lopez has had her moments to prove it.

According to "The Insider," Lopez was set to record in a studio in 2007 but had issued a list of demands before she even arrived. The list reportedly asked for everything from hot bread to dozens of packets of Skittles candy.

"Her people sent us a three-page rider request for her dressing room, which was absurd," an insider told the Daily Mail. "It was so last-minute. All the lights had to be at a certain wattage and at an angle to make her look good. We've never seen anything like it since Michael Jackson asked for a room to be made above the studio so his monkey Bubbles could watch him record."

ABS-CBN sweeps primetime

They maybe young but the proved that they can able to beat veteran and award-winning actors!

"Tayong Dalawa" starring screen partners Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson remained the preferred and most watched show on its timeslot amidst the entrance of GMA-7's newest drama series "All About Eve" which features a powerhouse cast. Though both series included respected names in showbiz as its cast, "Tayong Dalawa" banked on the still rising popularity of the KIMERALD love team.

"All About Eve" even rated lower than its pilot episode, making it at the bottom among GMA's primetime line-up.

Even Robin Padilla's action series "Totoy Bato" failed to end the dominance of ABS-CBN's "May Bukas Pa" which now includes Ms. Claudine Baretto in a guest role. Marian Rivera also saw a steady decline of viewership on her latest series "Ang Babaeng Hinugot Sa Aking Tadyang", a far outcry from her previous top raters "Marimar" and "Dyesebel", both which topped the nationwide ratings at one point.

ABS-CBN answers issue on MMK's Blusa episode

In response to the call of UPLB officials for ABS-CN to clarify the issue on its recent MMK episode featuring Ms. Angel Locsin, the network's Corporate Communications released its official statement.

It could be remembered that UP Los Baños (UPLB) reacted on the episode wherein Angel Locsin depicted a BS AgriBusiness summa cum laude graduate who got insane after several trials in her life.
The statement as published:

"Storytelling in Maalaala Mo Kaya (MMK) is always based on narratives sent to the program by people who want to share their stories. MMK decides to go into production of the chosen stories, ONLY after the letter sender has signed a waiver attesting to the authenticity of the story sent.

"MMK recognizes that a number of UPLB alumni are questioning the truthfulness of one letter sender who claims that her sister, the main character in 'Blusa' essayed by Ms. Angel Locsin, was indeed a UPLB BS AgriBusiness, summa cum laude graduate, who could not find a job and ended up as a stripper.

"When MMK found out about the adverse reactions, the MMK production group went back to the letter sender to inform her of the issue raised and to re-verify her account. She reiterated that she stands by her story.

"Be that as it may, and after careful deliberation, MMK realizes that its writing and research pool may have been remiss in one thing—verifying with UPLB the veracity of the indicated facts of the letter sender. Having said that, MMK sincerely apologizes for the oversight.

"MMK always aims for truth and excellence. This incident may have deviated from its tight norm, but rest assured that MMK will continue to serve its publics with utmost care and respect."
The particular episode received its highest rating to date on its Saturday timeslot of 37.7%

Paris Hilton gets new boyfriend

Paris Hilton has a new baby! Don't jump to conclusions, though — this one's covered in fur and has four legs.

Hilton's newest beau, “The Hill's” Doug Reinhardt, gave her a baby teacup Pomeranian for her birthday, along with many other gifts, said the heiress, who turned 28 on Feb. 17.

Her affection for Reinhardt, who's previously been linked to Lauren Conrad, was on full display over the weekend. On Friday at Ago, the couple stayed close, kissed and held hands throughout dinner as her party of 25 people looked on.

At Body English, the couple even smooched on stage for all to see.

Though the relationship is still in its beginning stages, Reinhardt said it's already serious. "I think so," he said when asked. "She's a very amazing girl."

Earning brownie points, he added, "She's the most beautiful girl on the planet. She's amazing, both inside and out."

ABS-CBN should revamp daytime programming

The Kapamilya network might have swept the morning ratings battle via its formidable Primetanghali block; talk show "Ruffa and Ai", game show "Pilipinas Game KNB?", and noontime show "Wowowee". But ABS-CBN failed to retain much of "Wowowee's" audience as its afternoon shows have been consistently defeated by GMA-7's soaps both in Mega Manila and Nationwide.

What the heck is happening?

ABS-CBN is known to be the "Drama Capital" of the country. It has been known ever since to be the creator of high anticipated and very popular primetime soap operas. But why the network cannot replicate its success in primetime to its struggling daytime programmin?

Primary reason of which is the lack of great materials. ABS-CBN has this tendency of using materials which are supposed to be great in daytime on its primetime line-up. As one could observed, there are many shows already canned but were temporarily shelved to give way for the extended runs of its current Primetime Bida line-up. "Florinda" was cancelled and Judy Ann Santos' "Habang May Buhay" is still waiting for airing.

"Florinda" and the medical drama "Habang May Buhay" could be great if aired weekly, on primetime during weekend perhaps.

If "Parekoy" and "Pieta" will continue to show dismal ratings nationwide, ABS-CBN should not think twice to remove them on its daytime roster and replace it with a pair of TV serialization of Precious Heart Romances and a SineSerye.

It could also be time to make Daytime an exciting battle grounds in the ratings game as GMA-7's SineNovelas were able to earn primetime-like ratings in Mega Manila. Stars like Maja Salvador, Melissa Ricks, Erich Gonzales, Roxanne Guinoo, and Shaina Magdayao; together with their respected loveteams should be turned into Daytime stars who will be constant fixtures in daytime soap operas.

Should ABS-CBN revamp its daytime programming?

Kris Aquino got the answer, "Now na!".
